safety: a state of mind (serious), not a set of kit

Re: Full of it!!!!!

Well we actually checked that before we went, got no signal from the GPS for the DSC, but the VHF still worked OK although with an annoying wine from the depth sounder. We reverted to the reserve handheld VHF. It is a shame that I chose such a strange dealership to use, but thanks has to go to Duncan for finding the fault, well wires not even connected! Although the plotter worked fine. Things can only get better I hope, but it still shows you, even if you pay for work to be done you can't rely on it these days, you still have to check. I am just glad BarryH was with me when we picked up the boat from the dealer on Friday evening, and all was revealed, as what has happened seems unbelieveable but true.

I think you have got some of your rumours wrong /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: Full of it!!!!!

So you hadn't checked your equipment and you didn't know it in side out even in day light let alone the dark.

Make a sentence containing these words "Arse" "Elbow" "Daylight" "nor" "Dark"

Dark Arse Elbow nor Daylight
there you go
makes as much sense as his kit list

You can add other words to them Sbad

Like "clearly doesn't know his kit from his arse or his elbow etc etc"

Playschool

Did playschool finish early for you today?/forums/images/icons/wink.gif Perhaps if you spent more time talking about the pro's and con's of various bits of kit and their uses, that would be more helpful than snide childish comments, but I guess you need to know what they are for first /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Happy1 = King Knut of the Solent

You obviusly haven't listened to the many words of advice and guidance given to you on this forum.

You clearly think your are imune from the dangers of a good swamping.

Your clearly have been in many dangerous situations before. Doesn't it occour to you this might not be a coincidence????

Many people on here have been involved in potentially dangerous activities without resulting in dangerous situations.

You assume that your research is flawless and your preparation thorough yet you didn't even check your VHF worked or that it wasn't crossed wired to your fish finder.

As the Crays once said........ "You've got nothing to say and your saying it too loud"

One final piece of advice from me............... "A closed mouth gathers no foot"

Theres an old saying, which seems appropriate here, H1 appears to be "up to his arse in alligators, but hasn't yet learnt how to drain the swamp" or "when in a hole, stop digging"

Re: Happy1 = King Knut of the Solent

I think with you a little knowledge is dangerous. I have explained about the VHF, I have listened to people, best we leave things now, as it is appears you don't want to offer any useful information.

Have been sitting on the sidelines thruoghly enjoying this discussion, FWIW I have no choice but agree with the others and not H1. I seem to remember you saying you were a marine in a past life, surely their ethos was to eliminate all but the most essential equipment so that it was ready to hand when needed and didn't mean you had to yomp around with a 100kg bergen?

I think the reason for that is that someone has worked out the best kit and what is required, unfortunately when you ask on the forum everyone has their own ideas. I perhaps should not have just got one of each, although I don't think I have that much really, but as I say, in time it will be narrowed down to what is required, but please give me a chance, I have only just got the boat, and I am still in training, unlike some of the old sea salts on here. Part of the fun is trying things out and seeing what suits, I don't see a problem with that. It would be nice if there was simple answer, but I blame the Chandlery's for selling tempting nonsense as silly prices, don't tell me that nobody on here has ever bought something they later found they didn't really need /forums/images/icons/wink.gif What's the rush anyway, I thought boating was relaxing, a kettle too many isn't going to kill anyone.

I am sure after a few more trips I will be down to my minimalist self kitwise, with my body back in shape as well, if Dr Atkin's does his job /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Couldn't agree more, however I feel that what people are trying to say is exactly that, "someone has worked out the best kit and what is required", maybe you should take my father's suggestion, he always said to me "take as much advice off as many people as you can, it's free and you can always ignore it" rather than trying to defend yourself. Don't take this as yet more criticism I'm a broker so universally hated for no reason and I know it can get tiring, christ you even get stick for trying to be helpful and typing out the weather forecast, keep smiling, if you can!

I agree Russell, and thanks for the kind words BUT, I haven't seem any kit list made up by anyone for me, nobody has questioned my circumstances, where I will be boating, kids e.t.c. just had a go at me for getting a bit of everything. I discussed my kit list at length with the RNLI sea check guy, so I know most of what I got was correct, he told me to get the fixed VHF, fairleads and a Radar reflector, the kettle and heater were my choice, but they weigh absolutely zero really. The spare form of propulsion was talked about, oars were not really an option on my boat so we agreed on the outboard and bracket, the dinghy is for the summer to get ashore to beaches with the baby e.t.c. we will take that as and when necesary, so there is nothing else heavy, just the lightweight honda gennie for nights away. It seems there are a lot of budding sea check volunteers on here /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I think yhou have got the right gear, it's just your boat isn't big enough to carry it all, remember one thing advice is free, well mostly anyway.

Thanks for the support

P.S. (send the SAE and I will send you the tenner /forums/images/icons/wink.gif)

Hard for me not to suppoprt you, you want to see the crap I've got onboard!! I'm definitely having a clearout this year, I could have a boatjumble on my own!!

Why not have a Forum jumble at the next meet /forums/images/icons/wink.gif Bring along what you don't want anymore, bit like a wife swap, except you don't get it back /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Hi Mr H

I am a bit late on this thread, but why do you need a gennie at all ?
I thought they were for fairly sizeable boats.

Do take care about the weight and hence your freeboard, the sea can be a very scarey place when it gets rough and it can change quite suddenly...

Geoff
