Sad tragic accident in Southampton

There was a video on FB earlier assuming before the fatality was known. Taken from a ferry by a woman.

The rib simply ran straight into it. Looked commercial and flat conditions.

Wasn’t you doing a coat overboard drill just off the hamble today was it?

Nope. We went down towards hamble about 13.00 was lively.. headed back to ov for some food and a drink.

7 gusting 8 at calshot. 6 gusting 7 at dock head. good to get out in some weather but wasn’t going to take a risk that would have upset anyone..

I believe the video was taken about 1010 this morn.

I suspect the lady who shot it is now in shock knowing what happened.

As I said I was not there but it appeared to be reasonable flat before contact.

But we all know film can flatten the water.

Very sad , in north wales only last week a commercial rib came far to close to our boat crossing our wake and overtaking to close , its for the thrill seekers but i feel they get to close .

i also saw the video and wish I had not, not because I am squeamish but because of what I have now learnt.

awful day for all concerned and my thoughts to all of them.

This follows another fatal accident on the Norfolk Broads a few days ago.
I have often thought that the broads are full of potential fatal incidents.
There should be at least some training prior to prople being permitted to hire boats. At the moment most hire companies just had over the keys with a "this is how it starts and stops and makes it go forward and backwards" briefing
Many of the folk hiring boats have NEVER been in command on the water and have no idea of what is required.

Hard cases make bad law.

The tragic case in soton water looks like it was a commercial operation.
So a qualified licenced skipper and a coded boat.

It is completely unrelated to the broads incident.

As for hire boats, thousands of hires, and when was the last accident?

Connecting unrelated incidents is unhelpful. Calling for regulation is unhelpful. One of these tragic accidents was (apparently) regulated.

Avoid knee jerk calls for regulation.

This was a commercial operation so I would say something may have gone wrong with the boat.
agree about boating holidays . You get half an hour of lucky from memory .
The Southampton operation was well run and when I went out on rib last year they were very professional.
let’s wait and see the outcome of thE investigation.
from what I heard the skipper was very well know and not a risk taker .

Any accidents such as this one or the one on the river Bure at Yarmouth are a tragedy for those involved. The Broads one involved a hire craft apparently trying to turn in a fast ebbing stretch of the river, this may have been an inexperienced helmsman, however few hire boats venture down there unless they know what they are doing as it needs special attention.
The report on the local news stated that it was the first fatality on the Broads for 4 years, which did surprise me, but maybe that it referred only to those falling in from a boat? I thought there were one or two most years?
