Finally went over to the Med for the day yesterday to view this S37. She looks in very good condition. Has been maintained regardless of cost. The current owner has spent 30,000 Euros since Jan 00, looked at all the service docs since then.

Not yet totally decided so therefore not put in a final offer, but the true cost of this boat will be what it costs to get it back to Southampton and put the kit on it that it doesn’t have at the moment.

I want to put on Erberspacher heating, colour plotter, colour radar and autopilot. So how much do you think each of these items is going to cost. Any recommendations where to go and get these things done. Is an A/P really necessary and is it easy to be retrofitted.

Also the 220V sockets are not the same as ours, and therefore I would suspect that the main shore power conection at the stern is different. Has anyone done these type of changes on their import.

suggestions

Spacher heating £2k, but doesn't it have reverse cycle a/c?
Truck to Soton £5500
Colour plotter/radar £5k (but varies widely accord to spec)
A/P quite spensive, £1800
You dont need colour radar, praps?
220v sockets will be cheap - sometimes are normal domestic shape, find trade supplier eg wandsworth.co.uk and diy
Stern power connection is OK. It might fit UK, if not just change the plug at end of flying lead £15

heating DL5 with cockpit outlet 2½k tops
7" plotter /Radar 3.4k
Power input the same but sockets probably by Gewizz Playbus about 6 quid per socket.

Transport from Med about 2½K but remember you have to get to France mainland so add in another 1½k for skipper from Ballearics (is that where it is?) and stay in Port Lecaut and lift out on to transport. Best is to skipper yourself from Islands to Port Lecaut cause skippers dont look after your boat like you would.

Speak to Ken de la Hunty on Fairline stand at SIBS about return transport and Chris Bugler in Poole phone book.

Ken does a fantastic job.

Look at a V40

Good luck

This might sounds like a stupid question, but I am interested in what he spent the 30,000 Euros on since 00, that equates to 10,000 Euro or £7,000 a year. I hope my boat, which is also a Sealine, doesn't cost as much as that to run.

If he's German, the boat will have been maintained from a distance, and probably "hand's off". So in three years engine servicing etc um might eat £8grandish, guardiennage towards £6k, new canvas praps £3grand, and £3grand for er other stuff, makes a nice round £20k. I wd not muck about. It is not common to find quite so much loot heaped on this size and model of boat, is it?

€30000 without any of those electrics does seem a lot. What year is she ? Maybe had a marble and leather refit !
If you get an autopilot (but why spend all that cash on a boat and then let a machine drive her ?) and your controls are electronic rather than cable, I experimented with a superb remote control gadget this summer which allowed you to drive from the sun cushion on the foredeck - excellent, but i don't know about price.

It's an idea to get the boat back to the uk ans safely in a berth when you want to keep it. then find a company to fit (or consider supply and fit) very local to that spot. Thisdoesn't apply if you plan to DIY

as oldgit intimates, no autopilot is a bugger of you go any distance - no problem out for a blast, but over 20 miles ugh. Note that the advantage of autopilot is not that it goes places automatically, but that you can let your hands of the wheel, keep an eye whilst have a cuppa, consult chart etc etc.

ah, but i am quoting gentlemans pricing for overseas visitors, and in the same way as it is no less than 100 quid for anyone foreign to cab from heathrow to central london, so boat servicing costs a bomb for foreign absent peeps in the med.

First thing I did on buying Mucky Farter was to fit an auto pilot. Sitting there with eyes glued to sea, compass and GPS for 90 miles and head stops thinking straight. Look at a chart and the boats turned round in micro seconds. Much more important than flash colour whatsits, although there nice. My auto pilot gets used the moment I leave the marina. I never use the wheel, it's about as much use as a chocolate fire guard on my boat. Just engines then auto.

Even at tcm's 'gentleman's' prices €30k is a hell of a lot of maintenance for a newish boat unless it includes improvements. Can you tell us what's been done?
BTW, I dont think there is space on the S37's dash to fit autopilot + radar + plotter. The pilot is a definite must-have but you may have to go for a combined radar/plotter to fit the helm. Also, I would'nt bother changing the sockets. Just buy some continental adaptors.

Regarding his 30,000 euros, seems like he had the engines serviced each Dec, and the outdrives each may.

It has had all new bateries, new charger, control panels, new props. Paid for the antifouling to be done each May (900 Euros) and clean and polish each may (900 euros.

You could eat your dinner off the engines or the floor in the engine room.
