Hi,
Just been quoted 3000 Euro to fit a Stainless steel stern arch for my 45 foot Jeanneau. Seems expensive to me for a bare arch, but am having difficulty getting alternative quotations. Boat is in Preveza. Is this good value or not?
Arch is for solar panels and includes an outboard davit arm - dinghy davits are not included. Design is in 42mm diameter 316L (so that dinghy davits could be fitted later) and examples of his work look very good.
Opinions welcome.
Thanks
Richard

I there a guy close to lefkas marina his workshop is near the bus station , he don't speak a lot of English but sure you can explain what you want , many people in tho parts will suggest Phil at Nirdi although his works is good so are his prices plus it's getting him to do the job when he says he Will , althou If you not in any rush you could ask him to price up the job . Personally I wouldn't bother with him .

I’ve picked up a rumour that Phil (aka Stainless Steel Phil) is not doing much, if any, work at the moment as he’s injured his back. However, he does do good work and good prices: only time I used him he needed a little reminder about times but he asked me to phone him and nudge him....
He quoted me €1250-1500 for a simple arch for solar panels in 25mm stainless on a 12m boat. The price increased dramatically for anything thicker than that: materiel costs and the difficulty in working thicker tubes being the main cause of the increase. So, probably your €3000 is not too extreme albeit at the upper end of the scale.

Phil The Steel at Nidri made me an excellent arch for €800 three years ago, working quickly to a tight timetable. This was of 25mm tubing for solar panels only.

But since then he's been difficult to organise into doing more. A nice guy, I'm sorry to hear he's been unwell.

A fellow forumite told me about a guy called "Dutch Pete" who worked out of Palairos. However, I could not contact him and was eventually told by a lady friend (poss. ex., no idea of relationship) that he'd returned to Holland. I doubt he is still around if his name comes up in any conversations with local sailors.

I had a similar problem and looking around with plenty of time didn't help. e.g. Guy in Cleopatra took ages to get back with a quote. No pictures, drawings or spec. just a price. A friend had already agreed to have him build an arch and it was fitted the day before launching but took months of chasing up.

I gave up and built my own from stock parts in Preveza Chandlery. They don't understand metric vs. imperial and just said different suppliers made slightly different sizes. I had to return quite a few parts and rummage for metric, still have a few imperial bits.

My arch was a little tricky for a variety of reasons.

1) Existing wind-gen designed to hinge across stern for maint. work
2) Forward pushpit section is very short
3) Bimini support hinges and moves backwards (and up then down) when stored (part of all over enclosure)
4) Bimini support arms need to thread past other supports and backstays when raising/lowering

This made the design a little more complex. I built 2 aft ladder supports and 2 side supports to an oblong frame (all in 25mm tubing). Seems to work well for 2x100W panels and also supports passarel in harbour.

Cost was under 500 euro (a simpler version would have been 350 euro) and it looks OK (but not a thing of beauty)). Still to test the folding aspect when I need to hinge it backwards to lower Wind-gen.

Picture pre-wiring tidy up.

Thanks for helpful replies. Wolfgang at Vonitsa has given me a quote which makes my original one look good value. However, his work looks superior quality. You takes your choice.
No reply from Phil at Nidri.
Will chase up Michael Krause.
Have heard positive things about 'guy who has workshop next to Levkas bus station', but no contact details. Maybe wait till I am down there again.

Tempted by Mistromas example of home made, but put off by: 1) my inability to make bends or weld joints - it will look obviously amateur, 2) it will take me forever, and swmbo will protest at wasted time "We bought the yacht to sail!"

Dutch Pieter from Paleros made me a simple arch in January last year. It holds 2 x 100W solar panels and incorporates an outboard hoist on one side. Made from 25mm tube and mounted on the pushpit. I have a windgen in the middle of the stern so it uses the pole for that as bracing. Lifting blocks for the pasarell towards one side. All very good and cost just over 500 euro. I haven't seen or heard of Pieter since he finished the work but he was talking about going back to Holland for a job for the rest of that winter. I got the impression that he considers Paleros as home so would be back at some stage. Phone number was +30 6980603227.

The bloke next to Lefkas bus station has a good reputation although I've not used him. He made a SS exhaust elbow for a friend last year in 48 hours and about 25% of the cost of a VP cast iron one.

About eight years ago I had exactly the same made up for my 45DS without the OB davit. It was done in the UK and cost £2.5K so I think your quote is in the right ballpark. Obviously quality is an issue that I don't know.
