Just heard about log books. Do I need one for my intro to sailing course in two weeks time? is it the same as logging hours when flying in order to demonstrate hours and type of experience. Where do I get one? what if I lose it? How much does it cost? Who can stamp it.

RYA logbooks are a bit of a palava. There is a different one for each discipline.

The only one that you -really- need is the Crusing Log, as it is a good way of recording your miles and night hours with a view to doing coastal skipper / yachtmaster practical exams.

I do wish RYA would somehow 'harmonise' their logbooks. I have five I think at the last count (Dinghy Sailing, Dinghy Instructing, Powerboating, Powerboat Instructing, Cruising Logbook).

Oh, the centres usually include one in the course fees but each centre is different so check with them directly.

I agree entirely. If only the RYA could see sense and issue one 'log book' that covered all activities.

WHAT! They'd lose a valuable revenue source then - wouldn't they? And the only ones who'd benefit would be their customers - It's not going to happen is it? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif - Silly Boy!

As I understand things, the only purpose of these logbooks is to record, in the case of the cruising logbook, stuff like NMs, days at sea, night hours, voyages over 60NM, and certificates etc. I can't see what possible use powerboating NMs would be for a dinghy qualification and vice versa. So why muddy the waters with bits of disparate information that someone else (like an instructor, or the RYA) would have to unpick for an assessment. Keep 'em separate says I.

You mean that I (who only cruise in sailing boats) should be forced to buy and carry a book containing the syllabi for all the certificates, dinghy, power boat, motor boats, ribs, wind sufing, and whatever, together with lots of columns that I never use? Now that's a really good way for the RYA to make lots of money!

Just heard about log books. ....

Seeking female for loving relationship, must be able to lift large anchor with bare hands, vast sailing & yacht maintenance knowledge essential. Ocean yacht master preferred. Age, looks, standard of hygiene unimportant.

I'm reminded of a similar lonely hearts ad ... " ... must be blonde, financially independent, have own boat, be able to cook, hand, reef and steer. Please send photograph of boat ... ".
