RYA fee rip-off

I don't think anyone is denying that there's work and cost involved. The point is how can you justify the cost of an ICC on its own being higher then the cost of becoming an RYA member and then getting a free ICC? I think thats the issue being raised.

Anyone sufficiently bothered would be best to join the RYA, get the free ICC (providing they have a qualifying certificate etc.) and then immediately cancel their membership.

It cannot possibly cost the RYA £38 to perform the trivial clerical work involved in renewing an ICC. It is patently obvious that they are abusing their monopoly position of issuing ICCs to raise income. What's to stop them deciding to charge not £38 but twice that or whatever sum they fancy? We won't have any option but to stump up, as we are obliged to have an ICC and have no other way of getting one. The RYA should be stripped of responsibility for any obligatory certification as they can't be trusted with it.

Correction the RYA do not have a monopoly
BSAC and BWS are both recognised by the MCA to issue ICCs. Funnily enough they favour there members as well.

If you dont like it then set up your own governing body and apply to the MCA for recognition to issue ICCs.

ICC .... please correct me if wrong ...

I don't have one, I am not a member of RYA ...

From various posts / conversations I've heard - ICC is free to members of RYA and against a fee for non-members ... replacing the Int. Helmsman Cert. of years gone by.

Another told me that it's only free and without test - if you already have DS or similar and member of RYA ....

Have looked on RYA web-site and it doesn't answer the question - just gives a tel. # to call for further info.

Now my question is .........

If I join RYA - will they give me a ICC free and without test ?

(I know that my Merchant Navy Certs are not accepted for issue of Sail RYA tickets .... before anyone asks on that ... )

Re: ICC .... please correct me if wrong ...

RYA members get the ICC certificate free - as above.

But you will need to take an ICC test, rather less demanding than Day Skipper - not free, unles you can find a friendly assessor?

if you have DS theory and practical you can get the ICC awarded too.

IMHO.

Well I think it is shameful...

.....All you lot charging around at will and with no paper qualification to prove you are safe. I bet you all don't leave the pontoon with lifejackets and harnesses on either.

Can they be used as evidence of competence for RYA motorboat qualifications? It would be an odd situation if a Master Mariner had to be tested by an Accountant or a Butcher who also happens to be a part time RYA examiner /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Trouble is neither of us have any of these bits of paper everyone seems to talk about ...

Now on to real stuff ... jokes aside :

I had to qualify for Lifeboatman Cox, sail, power and oars ... as well as my Deck Tickets and I'm not qualified in RYA eyes ... OK ..
Yes I could go along to a "school" whatever and do them - but to be honest - I'm too lazy and will leave as is till day I'm forced to go ... !!
