I confess that I used to think similarly to many below.

I was asked to join the RYA Council, and later (and currently) the Motor Boat Committee.
I think the main problem is lack of trumpet blowing on the part of the RYA.
As Byron bravely mentioned, continued cheap red diesel and ICC in place of Yachtmaster are just 2 things that directly benefit us motor boaters, that RYA have achieved.

Life is becoming very much more bureaucratic, and RYA are battling away, on our behalf, to stop, or at least limit, its invasiveness. You would not believe the number of EU committees that exist, that seem to poke their noses into our sport, all of which RYA try to lobby or join, in order to influence their decisions.

As one under the age of 60 years, and fully employed, the most difficult aspect of contributing to RYA is lack of time. Apart from the Eastleigh (RYA HQ) staff, all the Council and Committee positions are filled by volunteers, who by and large, donate their time and energy using the skills and experience at their disposal. They are very ably advised by the HQ staff, who have representatives of most aspects of the sport.

Wow. Now I believe me too!!!

Seriously. There is plenty of effort, plenty of results but perhaps rather too much modesty.

I shall suggest that RYA read this thread and take note of our views.

My original gripe was not about the RYA but about the Motor Cruising pages in the magazine containing nothing about the subject (and later I noticed 4 pages given over to windsurfing). The magazine constantly ignores motor boating, as in ditch crawlers, floating caravans and other stink pots. However the magazine is, to us, the window onto the RYA, and if they choose to write nothing about our hobby/sport then I will complain.

The RYA has done useful things in protecting us from the ravages of government in the past but unless it demonstrates some more relevence to motor boaters then I for one will stop contributing to its coffers.

Not True, the Cruising Association is also consulted, both sail and power

try getting your facts right

Could I suggest that you look at www.cruising.org.uk and then get your facts right....

Many CA members fly an ordinary Red Ensign but if you want to fly the defaced blue then fill in the forms, attach the vessels registry and pay the fee. Give away ensigns no. Have a look at the site and see if you can make a reasoned statement.!!!!!!!!!!

Re: try getting your facts right

I stand by my statement. The CA issues their warrant to anyone regardless - providing the have Part 1 or an SSR. I have even seen a Shetland 535 flying their Defaced Blue which incidentally is why so many members do not fly it, it has been cheapened so much. They pay no attention to the other requirements such as weight/length etc. etc. They pays their dosh they gets an ensign.

You must be refering to that provincial government in Westminster. I was refering to the real string pullers in Brussels. You know the ones that tell Tony and the failed cabin boy how high to jump.
