I've just got a letter from the RYA. I'm not a member.

It reads>>>>>>>> Calling all "Rag and stick" Blow Jobs" "Petrol heads" Stink Pots".
The time has come to set aside your differences!!*?***!!/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif <font color=blue>And live in harmony/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif<font color=black> They go on to say they want us to improve our behaviour!?*

On the plus side, they do say that raggies have got to stop cutting us up. Stop shaking there fists and stop pretending to be under sail when the engines running. Problems caused by motor boaties are hardly worth a mention!

Wheres all this leading. We will be having tea parties and angel cakes with them next!! You can read all about it apparently. Here. www.rya.org.uk Under frequently asked question.
They have a seven point plan.
Can you all think up an alternate plan???

Will it work "Sea sense", when I did My RYA Day Skipper the RYA instructor was sarcastic towards us stinkies, not that it bothered me, I'm thick skinned.

Lets face it where the sea is concerned we are second class citizens, although can you imagine calling the lifeboat out with the reply "hold on we are just setting sail"

Personally I think it's the sailors who need to offer the olive branch, they have fuelled the divide.

I must be in the minority. I have never experienced any hostility from Raggies, in fact the reverse. I do however make it a rule to always respect their space and never ever cause them any discomfort from my wash.
Corny as it may sound, some of my best freinds are Raggies, people that I have met whilst boating.

Bollocks

It takes two to tango.
Both sides of any divide - perceived or real - are equally to blame. I have seen completely brain dead sailors and motorboaters acting equally stupidly. I don't think it helps to keep airing this one and if its the best the RYA can do - and I have been a loyal member for 20 odd years and am an ex-employee - then its time they took a good hard look at what they are about.
I'm also surprised at Haydyn publishing this as he is normally such a mild and sensitive contributor who refrains from stirring things up.

I think that smokies, stinkies and yotties should all gang up on one breed - and that's dinghy sailors. They are just the worst when it comes to being awkward on the water.

"I say you!! yes you!! Paaa boater - slow that damn thing down" and other such nonsensical cries can be heard from the dinghy club. And of course these cries are usually made at me while the little devils are tacking back and forth across my bows.

I think we should get the RYA to organise keel hauling and plank walking days for this sector of watersports. Give us all a laugh!!

Re: Bollocks

What you are describing are untrained mariner's not a divide in two fractions, to be honest I somewhat subscribe to this idea. When I first stated practical motor boating I had not the first idea of what to do or indeed how to behave.

Hopefully I have developed my seamanship, somewhat through friends who are sailors.

Sailors do make mistakes, however, by their very nature less obvious.

I think it is a training issue not totally a divide.

>>>>>>>"Mild and sencitive" EEr well splutter! Yes I suppose I am. Please would you put in a good word with Tutts for me.

I was not trying to stir anithyng up. Just having a laugh at the RYA and thinking of all the happy boaters sitting down for tea together. It's you lot thats inflaming the situation. Not little sencitive me!......................................./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Been called a merchant banker by raggers on two separate occasions.

One who I'd delivered a large dose of wake to (guilty as charged, very sorry).
And another who insisted on racing with himself in a dinghy in a confined fairway and got annoyed when I couldn't give way to him (you're te tosser not me mate).

Apart from that, on and of the water no problems.

Re: Bollocks

This sounds like an intelligent subject that's being aired, and maybe I can get an answer to every sea anglers querie, why do yachties have to come so close to anchored angling boats is it just curiosity or do they think they have found another Marie Celeste there being no shouting from the apparently deserted craft in their way. Or is it the fact that they wish everyone to see them so far out of the estuary so that they can say they saw such a body from the A pontoon and they were at least 30 miles from shore. Or is at as I suspect, that once clear of the channel markers they switch to Auto and disapear below and fail to keep a proper watch.

Possibly have some kind of open boat day, whereby clubs marinas etc.
invite the other side out for a couple of hours around a busy estuary to
experience each others problems in congested waters, or is this taking the realms of reality to far considering the antagonism that rears its head
on these forums?

Oh no. Thats already been done. Kim aranged it. All covered in MBY and on here. I was looking for some posts on tea and angel cakes parties with the raggies. Not the usual raggie did this and stinky did that stuff. Thats already been done to death. Is there some common ground. Do we both eat chocolate bisciuts, or do raggies only eat Parkin cake.

Re: Bollocks

I don't think its any of those. More a lack of awareness that by coming close to an anchored fishing boat they may scare off the fish - what exactly is the problem - is it scaring fish or is it wash - see I don't fish so I don't know. My own perspective is that I have no idea whether the boats I can see are being piloted by master mariners or village idiots - so I err on the side of caution and give everyone a wide berth!

I've thought about this issue quite a bit over the past couple of days and have come up with a theory that once upon a time - the people who went sailing - motorboating or yachting were in the main ex services people with a health knowledge of seamanship. The RYA has worked hard to bring boating to the masses - boating is a widely popular and affordable pastime now and not for the elite or the ex- military - but in amongst that there is a fair degree of ignorance that perhaps was not there say 30 years ago. This model stands up when you compare it wth skiing which has gone through a similar transition and has its fair share of stupid/thoughtless participants - and again - this sems more prevalent now in days of mass partipation than ever it did. parental advice and guidance - rules of the road - rules of the sport - were a fairly sound way of picking up a behavioural code. Coming into a sport without that advice and guidance - as many do now - means that they are denied a vital step in their induction to the activity. Perhaps there should be a better educative process?

Re: Bollocks

I always go close to fishing boats. See if they are catching anything. Follow them about a bit. They might know where the fish is.

Re: Bollocks

without doubt some boaters are poorly informed, if there is a problem its roots are lack of education and understanding. The divide may be unfounded and without substance, if so, very hard to repair if not imposible , would the RYA like to tackle the north south divide? Some form of basic shore based awareness?

Re: Bollocks

25 Years ago when Yachting was the last bastion of civilisation there was no divide. Now however all sorts of Yobbos with a fist full of pounds have bought yachts. Some are of these are the same dudes who wouldn't dream of giving up their seat to a lady even if she were aged or pregnant. They have no concept of good manners on shore, how can one expect any better afloat. It is these few that tar both sides with the same brush.
