Sensibility got the better of me in the end, and I've ordered a Honda CRV, rather that a Mazda RX8.

So now when I buy that replacement (smaller - since I've spent some of my boat money on the car) boat, at least I'll have something to tow it with!

So my question is:-

What's the biggest boat I can look for that can sensibly be towed by a CRV, i.e. not just 10 miles down the road to Cleethorpes beach, but 250 miles North to race Alistair down Lomond?

Your suggestions appreciated

Cancel the CRV - it'll only tow 1500kg. eg. a large dinghy.
Subaru Forester will pull up to 1800kg but a Legacy is even better at up to 2000kg. Audi A4 Avant Quattro will manage 1800kg. Nissan Xtrail will do up to 2000kg. With the exception of the Audi I think all these cost about the same as the CRV.
All these have 4 wheel drive.
Anyway, how come you've not bought a diesel ?????

Have to agree with Whisper. CRV is great car; have had mine two years from new and will probably get another. However, towing capability is not great. I use it to tow my caravan, maximum weight 1100kg, and I never feel totally happy with it although well within the recommended 85% 'rule'. My old Rover 600 diesel was a better tow car.

CRV !!! /forums/images/icons/blush.gif

Next you'll be buying a petrol boat and putting something sensible like a DIESEL engine it. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Dont know about the towing ability but I bought a new CRV for the wife recently. As expected, its been 100% reliable (unlike my crappy Merc which cost 3 times as much) and its a good road car for its type. My major beef is that it is only part time 4WD and seems very reluctant to switch from 2WD to 4WD. I certainly would'nt fancy taking it very far off road at all. If I was buying this car again, I think I would be looking at the Forester or X trail because they have full time 4WD

We are on our 2nd CRV, kept the 1st for 3yrs from new and got 55% back towards the new one last September. The new models with the v tech engine are much quicker (livelier, much better than test figs suggest), ours have both been automatics. The 4wd comes in rarely because we are not off roaders, but it has come in when expected on snow and ice, so what if it doesn't run AWD on a dry road, it is not required. We have the top of the range version with leather, satnav, bigger alloys etc, very comfy and the rear seats/luggage capacity multiple variations works really well for boat or golf gear carrying.

So if it doesn't pull a big enough weight towing, reduce the load but keep the CRV!

SWMBO is on her 3rd new model CRV in 2 yrs, having written off the first 2. One of the reasons I bought it was because it achieved a high rating in the Euro N-Cap crash tests and you can understand why. SWMBO can testify that you can roll a CRV very well and walk away. Agree that you dont need 4WD for the road but the front wheels seem to scrabble a lot for grip before 4WD cuts in which is a bit irritating

Buy a Landrover, best tow weights in the class, The Freelander TD4 auto is the best, cheap to run and will tow 2 tonnes (I think)

Much better get the Discovery and tow any size boat you want, dont go for the V8, you think a boat can drink its nothing comparied to the V8. I would hate to work out the mpg on mine, I think its about 10mpg with the roof rack.

Thats not an issue for MW...

He will just convert it to diesel, start posting, regularly, on a car forum about how great diesel is and the write an article in Top Gear complete with photos. I can't wait

Actually Martyn there are some great deals on Discoverys at the moment - they are bringing the new one out in September so speccing up the stock and giving BIG discounts to clear. Get mine tomorrow. Do like the Honda though.

Re your other post Jim, I haven't been invited to Driffield but I intend mentioning it at handover tomorrow.

Re: Thats not an issue for MW...

It is a Landrover Owners International Mag event, not an offical Landrover Day.

You should get a voucher to do a free half day off-road at Coniston Cold, which is really good.

What Spec are you getting?? What dealer are you getting it from?? there are good and bad.

I broke down in a 1997 RR on Armstrong Massey forecourt a couple of year ago, they told me to ring LR assistance as they could/would not help!!!!!

Luckly I spoke to my normal dealer, Ripon LR, and they arranged a replacement car at their Tadcaster Farm services branch with 10 mins, great service. Sold me 4 cars since then and would not buy a LR from anywhere else.

Re: Thats not an issue for MW...

Thanks Jim,

It is Armstrong Massey so perhaps I should have posted for advice before buying. That said, this is our second Discovery from them and everything was OK last time

The model is the Special Edition (ie Clearance spec) Landmark, Upgraded ICE, Leather, Park assist etc - price is good as well.

Used to see the Landrover offroaders at Coniston Cold on way up to Windermere - there are some - errr ---- interesting descents there.

Regards

Re: Thats not an issue for MW...

Hope you really enjoy your Disco, they are a cracking vehicle. We really enjoyed our TD5 ES, for the first two years at least, then quite frankly it started falling to bits. Such a shame as I really loved that car, had teles, PS2, the lot fitted.

Agree entirely with posts about dealers, I don't think there is a decent one amongst them in Birmingham/Coventry area. Desperately wanted to justify cost of Range Rover when changing car in March. Not one dealer I visited even bothered to come out of their plush offices to speak to me, when I asked to see someone, couldn't be bothered attitude. Bit different at Porsche & Lexus though, couldn't come out of the house each morning and look at Porsche, it is ugly but nice and quick, so ended up with Lexus RX300. Fabulous car, does everything well it seems, (inc getting my first speeding rap in years) fully loaded as standard too, but won't have anything like Disco / RR poise on anything other than tarmac.

Really enjoy yours, I truly miss mine, they have got a character all their own, just one that isn't to well put together eventually. Paul

Re: Thats not an issue for MW...

My Dad has just bort the RX300 - excellent car as you say and great value for money. Not a serious pulling machine though.
The real shame is that they dont make a Diesel version. Oh well he could always convert it /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

I daren't ask about her driving skills especially as you thought the crash test results were a good selling point! I have never noticed the scrabbling, maybe I'm light footed or maybe it is because ours have always been automatics?

Re: hm

I am rather disappointed in this, and wonder if you need a boat after all? Why not just buy a wetsuit and splash around at the end of a slipway and save a few more quid? Secondhand wetsuit of course.

Yup fully agree great car the CRV bought mine in 1998, brought it to Spain with me, never let me down, 4 wheel drive cuts in on Spanish mud occasionally, but as you say, dont need it 95% of the time.

Only gripe a wee bit thirsty I feel.

Oh Dear Martyn,
You've been away from this boating lark for too long/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif, Been out and bought a Petrol car, And now have a Sportsboat (probably Petrol) on your shopping list. You must be finally seeing the light and the end of that Dirty long Diesel tunnel.

Martyn!(MedDreamer)!!! Do we let him back into the Petrol Heads Club??

And if you fancy a race on Loch Lomond, I'm up for that, But it'll need to be soon, as i've heard a rumour that there maybe a new speed limit going to be imposed soon, 60Kph. Dam/forums/images/icons/mad.gif...
Maybe we could arrange a Forum Meet up here, And we could have plenty of spectaters.. Big BBQ, vast amounts of Whiskey and plenty of Nurofen for the morning after/forums/images/icons/crazy.gif.
Talking of which I'm off upto the boat at 1730 this afternoon for a Party that could last all weekend, Only problem is, it'll mean i cannae get oot in the boat.

To forgive is divine :)

Martyn has obviously been through some sort of mid-life crisis - it is even rumoured that he has been putting in full days at work WITHOUT clicking on the MOBO forum !!!

I'm on for the northern forum meet even if I am UK boatless, but I can sit smugly in the bar and tell you that I only pay 65p per litre for petrol in Alcudia

Regards

Martyn

PS Confession - my petrolhead credentials are a little shaky now as I pick up my new DIESEL Discovery this afternoon.

Re: Thats not an issue for MW...

Sounds a good spec and they are great cars, my brother has the commercial and just done 75,000 in 2 years without a problem, just picked his new one up 2 weeks ago.

My wife had the TD5 ES until she pointed it up a bank at 40mph and rolled it. Not the cars fault she pointed and it went. It was my fault, I wanted the one with 18" alloys!!!!!
