"Volunteers have got to start somewhere."

I suppose I'm a bit over protective of my boat (we've had it since 1956), but when a volunteer was about to do it serious damage & I had to shout at him to lower the sluices (he was lost in conversation with the support people for the comedian doing the river swim & was profusely apologetic afterwards) I'd rather they either use professional EA staff or have it on public operation.

I agree 100% .

The accident that was going to happen wouldn't have under DIY because the sluices rise in slow stages. I don't mind getting close up to the front gates but always put a spring on to hold the boat back; he did it so that with the two normal ropes + the spring we were still losing it.

Down here normal to keep an eye on what is going on in the entire lock as you have no idea of the capabilties of the people working the lock gates/sluices.
Regards the the Thames, despite the lock keeper doing the actual lock operation, most folks did seem to be paying attention as to what was going on elsewhere and reacting accordingly.

I usually moor up pretty quick, so hop off to help the rest of the lock users.

More people should do this
