Talking a balanced long term view ?

One hopes that a constructive and realistic exchange of views takes place, lesson can definately be learnt from the BORG crowd, members of which, have managed to alienate 50% of their possible supporters by various means .
The harder they come the harder they fall ?

I'm planning to refit and rebuild my engine bay tomorrow,

BUT

If I'm not covered in grease and blood (not to mention the sweat and tears),
I may try to attend to support your goodselve(s)...

so it's a bit better than a definite maybe.

It seems the EA manager speaking at the RUG meeting considers enforcement to be a potentially valuable revenue stream. Not just action on unlicensed boats, but also action on speed and wake/ wash. Look out for the Gatsos!!

Sorry couldn't make it Tony bit far away for me, do we get a report? official and unofficial:)
When I get around to it I will try and give you at least the keypoints of the meeting but I have 4 pages of tightly written notes and most of it is not of great consequence. The RUG minutes will no doubt be available on their website in due course and I will provide a link here.
Basically the EA gave a well presented powerpoint presentation of their thinking and planning including explaining the situation re lock houses, residents enforcement etc. Louis Jankel then responded on behalf of the 'opposition' following which there were questions from the floor.
Timing was allowed to seriously over-run and the rest of the meeting which dealt with more routine RUG 8 business finished up being quite a rush to get through.
Basically I would sum it up as, regardless of whether you agree with them, the EA did quite a good job of presenting their plans. The meeting did a somewhat less good job of arguing the case against and gave the chair a mandate to continue opposing the EA's intentions.

Well what a turnout, having managed to get rid of some grease from my engine building session, I arrived so late that the only room left to park the wagon was in the are marked "streich Verboten".

About an hundred folks of all sorts attended - perhaps a World Record for a Rug meeting.

Fantastic venue; could probably sustain 200 plus (OK have to park up the road) and an excellent Bar (shame no draught).

Thank you so much TMYC (well it's a Blue Club, so high standards are expected).

Well organised presentation from EA management on the current situation and hopes for the (immediate future) and somewhat cramped for time some other local interest presentations (that's what a RUG is about)

However, a sour note for me was the attack by Louis Jankel on what EA were trying to do (perhaps he was trying to be tongue in cheek or humorous, but to do it that way you have to be clever enough to make it obvious and wait for the laughs..). It was rude, no innuendo and so bad that even the normally mild mannered EA senior manager complained BUT was curtly terminated by the Chairman Mike Shifras.

Shame on Louis and Mike. Confrontation and attacks are NOT the way forward. Led by Innes and Mark were two lockies and I suspect at least two other staff, so six folks who could have spent their evenings doing something else - a helluva lot of respec' is needed.

There must be another way to get "our" point over

I don't get cross often - choosing to ignore the jibes elsewhere on this Forum about WSOB's - but the above was injudicious. 'Nuff said.

I dissociate myself as an committed Thames boater for the attack and discourtesy to EA personnel that were exhibited.

I'm sure many folk have been been subjected to slide shows (I was in the annex so couldn't see) which were full on rhetoric and short on substance - quite often given by people who are employed to present slide shows...
This one was of that genre. A few numbers - if available (??) - would not have gone amiss. In any even good try chaps.

A couple of points that I found of interest - I may be reading between the lines:-

1. The lock houses rental scheme is part of a plan that is on trial for 18 months and will be reviewed.
2. If needs change EA can take the properties back.
3. Budgets have been "flexed" to provide funds to maintain the current staff levels and to do some essential maintenance.
4. Further use of volunteers is being examined and possibly in other areas which would not compromise lockies.

I hate public meetings and this one dragged on a bit - a firm Chair is needed to control proceedings - but for me was well worth the dereliction of other "essential duties" to hear what was being said and perhaps to see the enemies in action............

(I'll get stick for that lot)
