rudder/helm indicators.

All the ones I've seen have been a "sensor" connected mechanically to some part of the steering mechanism that moves ....this connected electrically to a indicator dial near the helm. A little like a mechanical level guage, if that's clearer?.

For single non-hydraulic helms, there's a gadget that sticks in the middle of the wheel & indicates position ...made by Davis (I think) & costs £20 'ish .seen in compass catalogue + many chandlers.
