Rudder Angle Indicator

One of items of equipment deficient in the boat that I have purchased is a rudder angle indicator and I would quite like to have one fitted before the season gets underway. On searching the net the only indicators that come up are those that come with autopilot.
Surely it ought to be possible to obtain a rudder angle indicator with out having to shell out huge sums of money on an autopilot? Your thoughts and experiences would be appreciated

I believe you need to get a rudder angle indicator sender, and a gauge for that. Picking a random US website, the sender seems to be about $56, and the gauge similar. For instance:

You can buy one easy enough. Nearly every boat is fitted with one from new. Not hard to fit yourself.

Yes I used to have a Vetus one until the sender got drowned. Still got the display unit in the house! Wasn't exactly an essential bit of kit.

Well it wont with one little engine will it!! When got two. No idea where rudder is. Cos dont make much difference. Sorry I shot myself in the foot. Forget it!!

Do what the raggies do, and put a Turks Head knot at top of wheel if so forgetful that cant remember where amidships is. Far simpler than gadgets to point out the obvious

Ah well thats cos your thick and not had two engines. Also V* splutter O wheel and not know arse from elbow. Then have not got a clue where wheel is. Am I making my self clear??

Wot's an elbow - something to do with exhausts isn't it?

If you haul wheel one turn right, then one turn left centres it. Same as in car, not difficult to remember where wheel should be if you're paying attention??

I fitted the Davis Rudder Position Indicator which cost less than £20 and it is great. I often want to take it to bits to find out how it works though. To buy one most chandlers either have them or can get them.

But Brendan........

Ahem Brendan, on a twin station hydraul steer boat only the wheel you move moves. The other wheel stays still as the rudders turn. So you cannot tell the rudder position by looking at the wheel or a marker attached to "top dead centre" of the wheel, etc, becos it's different evry time. You would actually have to spin the wheel full one way, then full the other, then back to the halfway point, just to find amidships, and it's blimmin tedious to do that everytime when mooring, if say 4-6 turns lock to lock as many are. So, rudder position indicators are axshully quite useful, esp when mooring in the marinas where you want the rudders straight in order to steer by throttles!
