Is there a simple way to measure RPM (Bukh 10HP), without going to the bother of permanently installing a rev counter?

Measure the diameter of the crankshaft pully and the size of the alternator pully.

Calculate the percentage size of the alternator to the crankshaft.

Paint a small white dot (It must be white) on the edge of the alternator pully wheel.

When the engine is running, count how many times the white dot passes the top of the alternator in a minute.

Apply the above mentioned percentage. This will give you the rpm of the engine.

the respondent above must be a whizz at counting b....dy fast!

buy, borrow, or hire an optical rev counter. this requires you to put a reflective marker on the crank pulley, and the rev counter counts the number of times a minute this marker passes it.
