Router to access Marina WiFi

I want to replace the 950 as it does not support captive portal connections. The one that Paul Rainbow links to does not allow a sim to be added.

What I would like is 1 or 2 SIM card slots, 5G compatibility, captive portal support and allow me to connect an external aerial. Any suggestions?
Not sure if it supports all of those features, but have a look at the Teltonika 5G range, make sure you're sitting down, they're not cheap

Teltonika Networks Ethernet and 4G/5G Cellular Routers

I would also recommend dual band, 5Ghz is so much faster than 2.4Ghz, if th incoming connection is up to the job.

My phone is 5G and supports 5Ghz, depending on internet traffic i can get speed tests in excess of 200 Mbps

Just an update (in case anyone is following this thread) I tried the MikroTik Metal 52 AC which was a beautiful bit of kit but after struggling for 3 days with the software, I gave up and returned it. Such a shame and I was disappointed, but these days you are left to get on with setting up on your own (even YouTube didn't help.) Unfortunately the window of returns ran out, so I returned it. I have now ordered a Camp Pro 2 and will give this one a go.
Trouble is, with advent of Starlink, a lot of these systems are being left behind in terms of development.

2.4ghz and 5ghz here in Ipswich. It's actually usable !
We live in Spain and our home marina is only 2.4ghz. I would rather go for the Camp Pro 3 but the price is just a little out of my comfort zone. We normally get by quite happily on our mobile phone data allowance, so it's quite difficult to justify spending this much to my wife ;-)

Living as I do in Latvia ..... 4G is general - 5G is many areas but not everywhere .... the mobile phone contracts are actually quite good - as long as you are not daft and accept all options !!
I have two Mobile Routers - one is 4G and about 6yrs old .... costs about 18 euros a month unlimited .... the other is a new boosted dual unit that gets 5G if available ... that's also 18 euros a month and unlimited.
A third back-up system is by radio-link ... also 18 euros a month and unlimited.

All three cater 2.4 + 5Ghz ... but in reality despite claims about 5 .. its not better ...

Why 3 systems ? I run my business from home and I cannot afford any down time ... I must have connection at all times. Company pays and having that thought I shall always have connection far outweighs the costs.

I am thinking about moving one of the Mobile Routers to the boat ... being EU - the contract is EU wide voice and data ... Router accepts 12v power - so a regulated power input is all I need

Going back to your original post, (I know I'm old) but I'm a little confused with what you get. You say you get the marina wifi?so you are logged on to the marina wifi, why is it costing you mobile phone data?

As far as I see it if you get a wifi signal from your marina a simple low cost range extender will amplify the wifi signal you get and spread it over an area bigger than your boat .
What am I missing here?
A friend in 🇬🇧 UK lives in a dead spot for phone /Internet but his neighbour has wifi from a landline so with an agreement I put a simple range extender on the boundary fence (the edge of his wifi coverage and this gives my friend reasonable wifi all around his house...I think the extender cost about £30 back then and all that was needed was to pair it up with the wifi signal and enter the neighbours password
Is worked for many years and is still working at this moment.....

I'm still using a Teltonika RUT950 on board.. It is nice to be able to share WiFi for any crew that visit.

It has the ability to set an external WiFi as it's primary WAN with fallback to a SIM card should you ever add one.

LAN side can be wired (useful if you have a boat computer without WiFi on board) or WiFi for friends and crew.

It saves telling them all the marina WiFi code..!
Just found this thread... Can Teltonika be used via "captive portal"? We are in a marina with a weak wifi and mobile signal is also patchy, so looking for a solution asap. Thank you.

Yes you have to install a plugin/bundle (it is within the config pages) the if you connect to a wifi with a captive portal one user will be prompted to enter the credentials and then everyone can use it. Usually it is me because as soon as I connect to a hotspot I check it is working and get re-dierected to the CP when I enter the credentials.

I need to activate remote access so that I can post screen shots.

Thank you, sounds good. Is that the RUT950?

The RTU950 needs 4 antenna connections, 2 for WIFI and 2 for LTE. For WIFI to be usable you will need to fit the best antenna you can get and something like two of these.

OMNI-498

I just fitted this one which has 4 x SMA connections so does wifi and LTE but in hindsight I think I would have been better to have fitted dedicated WIFI and LTE antennas.

MIMO-4-15

One more thing. Antenna cables from the RTU 950 to the antenna need to be really good like RF400. RF400 cables are about 8mm diameter. I have 2 x RF400 and 2 x 3mm cables, the 3mm cables are hopeless the losses are significant. I intend to replace the 3mm cables but the cable runs are really difficult. When testing I found that with wifi I could only pick up the nearest 11 hot spots but with the RF400 I was getting 36. It was a similar story with signal strength with mobile signals when I tried the two different cable types. At the moment I have connected the good cables to the LTE as we use a sim all the time. We tend to use the hotspot when abroad and I hope to have upgraded the cables by then.

Thank you ever so much. Not being technically inclined, it seems a lot more complicated than I was hoping, but I'm sure my skipper will be able to make sense of it. :)

Is there a retailer in UK selling Poynting products? I can't even find a price... Also, it may be a silly question but why does it need an additional antenna/s if it already comes with 2 for wifi and 2 for LTE?
