Oh no! Apparently AT hit some cliffs on Guadeloupe, damaged his boat, and had to use engine to reverse off. Boat still going but protest lodged with Rce Cttee.

Currently 30 NM from the finish on a difficult coastal route and making 2 to 4 knots, with the second place guy about 170 miles behind him.

Such a shame he was on track to finish mid morning and may now struggle to get in today.

I speculate he may have been asleep when he ran into Guadalope and now the race committee has to consider if a time penalty is to be awarded as he used the engine to get off the rocks.

So Alex bumps into Guadeloupe, is penalised 24 hours and a Frenchman wins!
Hmm. Looking back, I don't see many non -French winners :)

As he said his actions were unforgivable and he effectively disqualified himself, considering his lead at the time he made a catastrophic error in trying to sleep.

I think you are either being overly harsh or just do not understand. It was not ‘trying’ to sleep it was a ‘failure’ to wake up and he has fallen on his sword for that with much more grace than your bumptious stayed opinion.

Yes I heard his interview but he was within hours of the line did he need the 20 minutes, given that he was not overly stressed for the latter part of the race I am wondering just what was the reason behind taking the 20 minutes sleep in such a position.

I've done extended duration caving, 40 hours plus non stop, and in the end it's possible to fall asleep without warning. I've fallen asleep suspended on a rope in a harness whilst climbing somewhere on a 600ft pitch.

Being charitable I will just assume you have no cognition of the effects of extended sleep deprivation.

The difference being that he is well attuned to sleeping fort short periods and also when necessary going for prolonged periods without sleep.

To answer the question and put Normans mind at rest I have a reasonable understanding of the effects of sleep depravation and also how to acclimatise ones body to short rest periods and also how to do without sleep for long periods.

The question he has not answered is why he chose to sleep when a matter of a few hours away from crossing the line in 1st place?

He did answer that question more than once.
