Rough cost of bowthruster installation on 24' boat?

HI. The previous owner of my Sealine S 25 had one fitted in 2006 A Vetus 35 KGF including tube control cable battery wiring cost then 1169 75 to glass in the tube cost 928 he had to have the grey water tank altered the job cost. 3305 sorry prices are not up to date but hope this helps

A bowthruster on a 24' outboard powered sportboat? The mind boggles. Still, life would be boring if we all wanted the same things.

Sounds like 'Parking sensors on a Smart car' LOL

Better to learn how to handle the boat. Bowthrusters are next to useless...

Why is it when anyone asks about a bow thruster on here people have to try and shoot them down in flames I don't get it, I would much rather have a very good bow thruster on my boat to help me and I would rather my neighbours had a very good one too, whats the point of wanting less when a bow thruster is obviously a help and may avoid damage to others or your own craft

don't personally now Nick H but after reading many posts he has put on here I for one would know he is more than capable of handling that boat

Never had one, found I could do almost anything without one, whatever the boat or conditions.

Watch loads of 'Bowthruster fails' every time I go out. Lots of noise, very little effect...

Perhaps thats why so many people laugh at them?

You're completely right. I had a visitor next door to me for a month last summer with a 30ish foot boat with a pair of outboards on the back, he didn't have the first clue how to drive it, I wish he'd had a bowthruster, it might have stopped him bouncing into his berth off my boat. Every blimmin time. Not very annoying, much.

PS I do know Nick_h and you're quite right, he is an extremely competent boat handler, I've seen him park his P57 in very challenging crosswind conditions. Made it look easy.

Well said one point some of us are well past our sell by date and mooring up singlehanded becomes more difficult in my case a bow thruster helps glad that some people can do it all perfectly in any situation an alternative for me would be just to sit and watch and MOAN about people using bow thrusters !!!

Strange attitudes, seem to be a minority of people on this forum with a superior/condescending attitude, be it bow thrusters, yachts, or outdrives.

Suspect the poster above has never owned a boat with a bow thruster, stating that they are next to useless is a particularly ignorant comment. They make life so much easier. No they're not essential, yes you can usually manage without, especially if you have two engines, and the boat in question is on the smaller side, and its fine if you dont want them on your boat, but why act all superior and condescending to those that do want them?

My current boat doesnt have one, and I've managed fine without, but there have been a lot of occasions where it would have made life easier.

If your point had been that b/thrusters are often used annoyingly (for too long, making too much noise, and not at all necessary) I'd agree with you. You see it a lot, though of course a novice boater has as much right to be there as an experienced boater so no big deal.

But the actual point you made is interesting. All big boats built these days to be driven by the most highly qualified professional mariners have b/thrusters or pods, so b/thruster owners are in pretty good company

Let's say you are reversing a 24m x 5.8m twin engine mobo into a 6m wide berth in St Tropez with 20 knots of crosswind. There is a boat either side already berthed, £5m each. You're a recreational boater, not loaded up with loads of deckhands who spend a lot of time in gyms. You want to berth without leaning hard on the fenders of the two boats either side of you, because that's classier and more polite. The crowd watching on the quay will instagram any minor mistakes and the crews of the neighbouring boats are watching. No pressure then!

Seriously, can you really do that without a bowthruster? In brief, how? I'd love to know. I'm happy to admit that after many years of this sort of stuff and a YM ticket etc, I couldn't do it

Yachts?
Devilish things wouldn't want one
Three types of Winds for Yachty Types
Too Much, Wrong Direction, Not Enough'
'Outdrives'- Seals (not swimming) Gaitors (not with big teeth) Aloominom, stainless steel, hydraulics, Gimble bearings, and such like all problomaticle
Sports boats with a single engine are the devil themselves to Park, especially as they normally have a 'Tent' which beggars the job up
Yep- yachts are useless and Sports Boats too, semi displacement folks or a 50 ft RIB with 2 x200 hp engines now that's the way forward and get B@B at yer destination:encouragement:
Then no need for Thrusters
Then as well as on a big RIB the Mother in law won't want to come (Bonus) and then again Folks yachts are easy to 'park' more stuff below to stop them wangin about in the breeze
RIBS are the way forward
Just gonna eat threE spare pork ones then Off to the Ribnet Forum
OK
I;LL GET ME COAT:D:D

As ever John, the voice of reason! As you well know, there is a difference between battery operated bow/ stern thrusters and those that are battery operated. The problem with installing bow thrusters in small boats is that the power offered is actually not enough to really make a difference when you really need it. Fart in a thunderstorm springs to mind !

I use two boats from training, both have bow thrusters. One has an ineffectual one unless conditions are benign, the other has a serious bit of kit that works well - both are battery operated. I tend not to teach their use on courses, but so much depends on the boat, wind and tide: not to mention the helms ability!

Do I use them on "big boats"? Of course! Would I use on sub 30 ft? No! But then I never had such "luxury"!
