I believe from previous advice that Nylon seems to be a better material for mooring rope than Polysoft (think that's what it's called).. I need to buy some tonight for the weekend ahead and have two options as follows:

2 x 10m 12mm Polysoft 3 strand for £19 incl postage

or

2 x 10m 12mm Nylon 3 strand for £21 incl postage

I think it's a no brainer and go for the Nylon but thought I'd check it out with the experts first..

sorry for the basic question in advance.. I want to make sure it doesn't turn out that all ropes aren't made equal before parting with my hard earned even if it's only 20 notes... actually, it's more a case of ensuring I get the right tool for the job this time as clearly the rope I currently have is rubbish for mooring... get my drift! /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Take a look at these docklines.

Docklines

Twice as much money (12mm x 10 m) but on plus side come with pre-spliced loop at one end so no need to worry if you've tied your bowline right!

Also, very easy to coil and soft on the hands. SWIMBO will approve!

Not sure if you can get smaller then 12mm anywhere so may be bit big for your cleats.

thanks but I've been advised to stay clear of that stuff as it doesn't have the elasticity of the 3 strand rope so it's more prone to working loose

sounds like it's best to go for the Polysoft gear then.
 
Those does not give ... so need something that gives som flex in addition to the docklines... have similar myself and is OK for handling and short term mooring .... anything overnight goes to three strand and permanenet is three strand plus springs...
 
Never heard of Poly soft. To be honest I've forgotten the different sorts of plastic ropes and what there good for, wich is strange, cos I used to work in plastics.

The ready made ones as shown, will be just fine for you, though some will argue about the stretch.
 
I wonder if you're confusing docklines with some other rope.

I promise you it gives. I guess it might not seem to give as much if you have to use a thicker rope (12mm is 44% stronger then 10mm based on cross area)

Never seen Polysoft 3 strand so can't comment.
 
Just get nylon, HLB will give you his, he gives 'em away.

I use soft spun nylon, bought a 300m coil from a company doing safety net rigging, 12mm, 3-strand, white, very soft on hands, £60. It only gets stiff 'cos it gets algae growing on it when it gets wet. Occasional washing in the machine in SWMBO's old tights as a bag does wonders.

3-strand is easy to splice, you can make up eyes. I have a bow, stern and an aft spring made up with eyes at each end to drop over bollards or be shackled to rings on the pontoon, the stern only tied off to the stern cleat to adjust the lie of the boat on the spring and bow rope. I leave them permanently shackled to the pontoon, that way we come in, drop the eyes over the deck cleats, tie off the stern and job is done in around 10 seconds.

Out of the 300 meter coil I have mooring warps bow and either quarter at stern, spares as fore/after springs, anchor warp for the kedge, and still have well over 2/3 coil left so it is not to ardous to discard the old ones and make up new when I have to. Thus far my nylon has been in service for 3 years, only the dockside permanent ropes have got a bit stiff.
 
Buy it in the swindlers in Lymington on Saturday, mate. Force 4 will be as good as anywhere.

Three strand rope is easier to work with (IMO) and you can get either nylon or polyester. Nylon is more expensive but a bit stretchier, but for what you need, either will be fine. What Haydn says is true - it will eventually go stiff and horrid if it's left out in the weather all year round, but that won't affect you as yours will only be used now and then. Even if it does go 'orrible, just stuff it all in a pillow case and bung it in the washing machine and it comes out as good as new.

thanks Graham, will pop in to Swindlers (an unfortunate name for a shop that) as advised to have a look and feel of the Nylon rope. I've ordered 20m of the Polysoft gear for now as I'd hit 'buy' before reading the more recent posts ...will get hold of 20m of Nylon rope if it turns out to be naff.
