What is the best splice to join "octoplait" to chain ?

My current splice involves tucking the rope into about 10 links of chain. It works well but the joint is made by a single set of the 8 strands and I worry that abrasion at the joint rapidly weakens it.

Hence as the rope is getting a bit hairy at the joint I plan to remake the splice ( I do it every few years )

I have seen an alternative splice which is more like a back-splice which means that there are double the number of strands actually carrying load . Hence I am thinking about using this type of splice when I remake it.

I know that the back-splice is a bit more bulky and wont pass over the gypsy but thats not a problem given the way we recover the chain

Any thoughts / advice ..

Any reason not to use the back-splice approach ?

I can't see how a "back splice" gives you double the number of strands carrying the load. What it does mean however, is that at the point where the strands are sharply turned back on themselves on the chain, you are introducing a point of potential weakness. If this is also going to give problems at the gypsy, why not stay with the existing method?
Jimmy Green (chandlers) seem to advocate either method.
