I asked a man on the Plastimo exhibition stand if anybody had contemplated a drum to take up the surplus furling line that normally accumulates in the cockpit as the sail is pulled in. Thus the line is either on the drum on the front or on a similar drum (mounted on a guard rail say) in reach of the cockpit. The drum near the cockpit could work like a fishing reel complete with ratchet and free wheel etc. The man from Plastimo thought I was barking mad. Why not?

i've been using this system for over 6 years, you dont need a sophisticated rachet system a simple v snubber works fine ,i made the drum myself , i run the furling line thru a block on the pushpit stanchion to give a fairlead to the drum ,i can e-mail you a jpeg of the set up if you want.
dead simple works brilliantly

If you have ever been unfortunate enough to get caught out in a blow and had the experience of the reefing drum failing to operate for whatever reason, then I do not think you would be seriously thinking of introducing another reefing drum into the equation. Keep it simple.

It is sometimes said that all new ideas are considered heresy, especially if they are really good!
So,
A jpeg for me too please, pretty please.

I will be most grateful.
ps. I'm also very fond of a bit of heresy.
