Rolec Leadmaster vs Metermaid

Just seen this on a marina notice board:-



I have a Rolec, as do many in my home marina. What’s the issue?

Ask the marina. The cynic in me thinks the local chandlers has a job lot that has been sat on the shelf since 1963 and wants to get rid of them.

these notices were posted at Fambridge some time ago (pre - covid???). Rolec were changed for Meter Maids foc afair

My home marina is about 15 miles away from this notice board and I’d say that Rolec is more common than Metermaid. Also, much of the shorepower distribution in many of our marinas is made by Rolec. I’d like to understand the reason for the ban.

Haven Marinas had a couple of fires with Rolecs and banned them throughout all their sites.

I don't believe any nefarious reason, like having a deal with another manufacturer, because I bought a secondhand meter of obscure brand and they were fine with it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rolec's meters are no more dangerous than any other brand - statistical luck means that sometimes genuine coincidences do happen. If they had 2 or 3 fires over a period and they were all Rolec meters then it would be human nature to blame the Rolec brand - and many people wouldn't discredit that assumption just because Rolec's meters are the most popular.
