Caught an intruiging program on Radio4 yesterday afternoon. It's only 15 minutes, and about rogue waves....started with an interview with an ex captain of the QEII explaining how they were hit by a rogue wave which buckled the foredeck down by 10inches, and drove a 9"diameter supporting pillar into a H girder which supports the deck. Wonderful interview.

You can listed to it again on the internet
<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml>http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml</A>

and scroll down to H, then select 'Listen again' against 'How to find the sweet spot'

PS - if you want to hear it, make it quick, it will be replaced by todays edition later this afternoon

It was on the telly a number of years ago before the captain retired and they could see the wave coming well in the distance. The sea generally was quite calm. The headed directly into it (obviously all aboard were prepared for a rough time) It was assume the wave was generated by an earthquake or a landslide elsewhere in the world. The damage was significant considering the strength of the vessel but the size of wave was unbelievable.

Regards.

Peter.

Uhhm! Listen to this version then, totally different. Apparently is was very rough, and as a result they were hove to at minimum speed, and passengers had been warned not to go on deck. It was pitch black, and the wave appeared out of nowhere (it was white in the darkness)

Brendan,

Yes, I must have seen a completely different event.
Sounds like it was a horrendous time!

Re: and Drake Passage

A medium-size German cruise ship lost its bridge windows when hit by a rogue wave south of Cape Horn. Pictures and interviews on a Horizon (?) prog shown on TV a year or so ago. Also showed satellite images of so-called 100-year-waves which appear all over the world at any time, much more often than previously thought. A German professor tried to recreate a rogue wave in a long lab tank. He dried various sequences and was getting nowhere when suddenly -- bam! -- the wave he created blew the ceiling off his lab.
