Rodman 41

if you had someone totally new to boating, which would they find easier to berth?
I don't think anyone ever denied that pods+joystick make life easier to newcomers.
It's rather the opposite, in a sense - i.e. some of us think that this argument, which is unquestionably true, is actually abused (sort of) in comparison of the value of getting experienced in non-joystick operation.
Which is just a matter of practice, at the end of the day.

Ref. the sterndrives lover who fears that we (the anti-IPS gang ) would shoot him down in flames, two small comments, if I may:
1) we can still distinguish between IPS and sterndrives
2) being shot down in flame in a forum is part of the fun - name me someone who has never been, if you can...

PS: if you will eventually go for an IPS boat, being fully aware of all its pros and cons, who is anyone else to argue? Just don't forget to post some pics! :encouragement:
My only suggestion would be to take a bit of time to practice also with joystick operation, which takes a bit of sensibility to avoid the nasty side effect I mentioned in post #13.

I understand that I do not have all the lingo off pat but is an IPS boat not using sterndrives or are they called pods? :oCome to think of it, my old Regal had a sterndrive so think I have worked that one out. Thank you for picking me up on it, I am on here to learn but some serious filtering is needed. I should have used IPS throughout.

From all of the boats I have looked at, ones fitted with IPS are at LEAST 20% cheaper than a shaft drive and on a boat of, say, £150k that's £30k. Even with the increased maintenance that's a fair few years worth. What I do find amusing is the, "you're not a real man if you don't use shaft drive" type argument. Again, I may well not buy one but you need to do some serious sifting.

Is there anyone on here who likes them and is brave enough to say so?;)

Ooh! and just having a go at use the emogis.

Sorry if I came across as pedantic, as my other reply to Petem deliberately was, actually - but we have a background of reciprocal spell checking... :D

Ref. IPS/pods, just for sake of accuracy, "Pod" is the generic type or propulsion, with a steerable leg (sort of) protruding from the hull bottom (similar to those often used in sailboats, but bigger), while "IPS" is the Volvo Penta incarnation of the pod system. I used the terms as synonyms, in this context.

Note a problem and I kinda new sum of that but stupidly got sturn drives momentarily mixed up. Eye appreciate you're taking the effort to clarify.

There yew go that should keep yew busy for a minute or too :)

that's interesting, could you post a few links to the ips boats

I'm surprised of your surprise.
For any given size/model, with IPS the engines are significantly smaller and build times/costs are much lower.
They'd better be cheaper!

CBA. Have a look on Yachtworld or similar. Check out 3 cabin version of the sort I am looking for. There is one at around 165k Euros 2006 0r 8 if I remember. This is the one that I am told had engine flooded although has apparently all been sorted. It may well be that they are cheaper because there is a problem. And, as the consensus on here is that they suffer more problems, higher maintenance costs etc. then how could they possibly hold their price compared to a shaft driven boat.

Happy for you to find me a boat though, at absolute max budget of £150k preferably not before 2000, capable of cruising at around 18-20kts. Ideally it will have Med spec but can forego that.
