I'm going over to Punat in Croatia to hopefully finalise a deal for a 42 Ft Flybridge Cruiser. Much as Croatia is lovely, we want to move the boat to Spain. As I see it I have 3 options
1. Sail the boat from Punat round the boot of Italy and then up the coast and around to Spain. A very long distance and a fortune in Fuel, albeit a great trip.
2. Sail the boat to Rimini or somewhere similar on that East coast and get it transported either to Pisa or similar and then sail it from there saving a great deal of distance and time.
3. Get the boat transported from either Punat or Rimini and taken to say Barcelona.

I would be grateful for any advice and any cost indications as this is something I have never done before. I assume (geography not being my strong point that there is no passage via rivers through the boot of Italy?

Thanks in anticipation for any help or advice.

Road trans in Italy above a certain dimension doesn’t work , they don’t do it .Too many low objects off the auto strada .
If you think about it why ? As the place is surrounded by the Med ! Theres zero political will from the various stake holders to sit down and attempt to figure out a workable policy .

Thought about by sea transport ?

The factories inland ( read €€€ ) move stuff in the early hrs + police escort + electricity lines men + telephone lines men to remove and reattach obstructions etc .

What about the tax being Croatian , presume vat free - yes ? just wondering what’s was so special about the boat to buy one as far as possible from it’s intended home port ? I mean 40-45 ft FB s are 10 a penny in the med inc Spain ?

What is it btw ?

Croatia is now part of the EU, lots of boats grandfathered in when they joined a few years ago, lots of talk about it on these forums.

Sea transport to Valencia is most likely as it is a common stop for the various transport companies.

Another possibility for road transport is to go north to Slovenia. Many builders use this route for delivering new boats to Greece for example as it avoids going through Italy and further south through Albania. I bought a boat made in Germany for delivery to Corfu and it was by road to Isola and td commissioned there, then sailed down to Corfu.

I was looking for a specific boat, I had an aft cabin sea ray before and seen one in croatia. Its a 420 ac and thers simply none around other than USA. I would rather have bought in spain.

A Sea Ray 420 Aft Cabin. Thanks I'll look into that.

leave the boat in Croatia, and enjoy a few years of fantastic cruising waters, nothing better nowhere in europe,
after that, If you have not changed your mind and stay there, :) :
take it by sea, but take your time, do it in several legs, plenty of places along the road where the boat can stay temporary,
I did sof to Croatia, and a few years later Croatia to Naples and Sardegna.

@BartW
Eldest lad (also a Bart) says the same, and the pics he sends back from Croatia look fantastic, he has a Sib and takes it with him from Belgium, he has been going there for a number of years now.

where from in Belgium ?

when I was young, we towed 3 years in a row, a sib down to Dubrovnik region (with 4 kids in the car)
afther that same with 23 ft boat (4 years)
then came the karnic, 28ft towed it 3 times to Croatia, (kids in the airplane)
in 2011 we stopped towing that far, and purchased the big boat ( Blue Angel)
with that we sailed to coast from Montenegro to Venice and back,
still wonderfull memories on Croatia, will alway's be our favourite destination ..

We are from Hechtel-Eksel
Son has an Avon Sib that he packs in his caravan and heads off to Croatia with wife and 3 kids, he has been doing that for about 8 years or so covid permitting now. He has a 110 defender county station wagon, wife and kids usually fly and he picks them up along the way, with the age of the kids now I don't think they will be continuing as the eldest has her own ideas for a vacation now :)
