Yup, I know we've been here before but with another NIP sitting on my desk, I'm starting to think its time to fight back. I want to buy a GPS based scamera detection device but it must also have the following capabilities

- Also detect mobile cameras front and rear
- Easily transferable from one car to another
- Sits unobtrusively on the dash without getting in eyeline
- Does'nt pick up spurious signals
- Easily updateable
- Capable of being hard wired into car

Seems choice comes down to one of the above. What does the panel think? Is it true these things are going to be banned shortly?

I've had 2 nips lately, have PMed you with latest legal advice from the top lawyer man

I like the geodesy stuff, esp that really small one they do now. Too many of them look like ugly cheap alarm clocks plonked on the dash, ugh

I dont think they can be banned. They're just waypouint dtabases. There are many rumours of bans, which the govt quite likes, but the parliamentary draftsmen will know it is too difficult to write law that bans waypoint databases.

The ones that detect radar/radio waves can be banned

Using a Palm T3 with TomTom Navigator and the free download 'saftey camera' database. Excellent, IMO. I understand that the radar/laser detectors are next to useless these days - the cameras output so little power, and there is so much other clutter around (pedestrian crossings etc) that the cameras get lost in the noise.

It turns out that there are very strict criteria about where fixed and mobile cameras can be sited, and most of the available sites are already used, hence the databases being effective against everything apart from a mobile patrol with a handheld detector and a man stepping out to flag you down.

There's a chap posts occasionally by the name of Raven. He's a friend of mine, and has a road angel. He swears by it and I can see why as I have been out in his car many times. It does seem to sort out the clutter and pick up radar. Its uploadable and downloadable, so any new stuff can be downloaded from the net as often as you wish. You update others with any new finds and they update you. It does seem to be unobtrusive also.

Do a search for Raven and if you want to PM him, then just say I sent you. Cheers

A Road Angel doesn't pick up radar, it is a GPS Rx with a database of mobile, fixed cameras & accident blackspots.

There is an optional laser detector though, but that is a separate unit.

Rumour has it that radar/laser detectors will be outlawed later this year.

Snooper Neo S4 is the beastie to go for, will pick up SPECS, TRUVELO,GATSO, laser, the only one it won't detect as a stand alone is some older hand held radar devices and mini gatso but a small add on that can be remotely mounted can be bought.

It is GPS based, can be configured to your liking, will give a voice warning of of type of camera and the speed limit in that area (not accurate in road works though as they quite often change/extend the limited area). It can also inform you of 'High risk' area's and schools.

I've had mine a while now and use it on both car and motorcycle and find it gives me piece of mind. Both my wife and I have three points due for doing 36mph in a 40, we did not see the camera's, this unit will now preventg that happening. Hopefully....

Just beware if you are considering one of these GPS based units, they will not work if you have a heat reflecting windscreen, you will need to buy a different antenna.

Thanks cbrr3. 36mph in a 40 zone, that must have been a tough one to take
