A journey to the source of the Dee.

Is anyone interested in taking part in an unofficial cruise/ race for non motorised craft of any type, from Dawpool, Thurstaston, Wirral as far up the river Dee as it is possible to get in 24 hours?

Weather permitting, it will commence at Dawpool at 9 AM bst on Sat 27th April 2002. The basic idea is entirely un-tried or tested and will take the format of a cruise in company. Ie., It's free to enter and I take no responsibility for anyone who may come unprepared and get into difficulties. The first tidal bit has the potential to turn nasty for open boats if the wind pipes up. Not advisable if you haven't taken the boat (or crew) on open water before.
You will need a light craft capable of being sailed, rowed, paddled, carried up Chester wier and mast lowered for bridges with no outside assistance, enough food and something to cook it with, a mobile phone to communicate with the other participants, life jackets+waterproofs for all crewmembers, chart+ compass for the tidal part and anything else you feel like bringing (for example g.p.s, epirb etc. ) No motors are allowed on the river Dee above Chester without insurance, license etc., so this will be a sails and oars only job.
This is all just friendly advice as, if people turn up with something inapropriate, there won't be anyone there who will send them home/ not allow them to compete etc., so just use common sense.
Navigating on the river at night with no nav. lights probably contravenes a bylaw or two. Some may wish to camp/ moor and sleep at some stage and the upper reaches of the Dee are surrounded by private land. All these factors should be considered.
The way back is entirely up to participants. My boat will probably sail back to Dawpool after a slow meander down the river via many pubs. Others may wish to arange to pull thier craft out at Sandy lane, Chester slip on Sunday.
The "winner" will receive nothing but the respect of thier peers!
If anyone wishes to have a go at this, don't just turn up, as the arrangements are liable to change at short notice. Call Jake Frith as soon as posible on 07939583075
