River Roach moorings

It would be surprising if there hadn't at one time been public (land) access to the hard. Unlikely anyone could now prove it, though.

Well there was a timber yard and smithy on the site as early as 1873 along with a slipway and a hard. They were still there in 1897. By 1923, the smithy is still indicated but no timber yard. There's still a slip but no indication of a hard. The slip leads into the building overhanging the river bank as it does today

By 1972, the slip is no longer marked on the OS map but a narrow hard down to the LW line is indicated (albeit covering a much smaller area than the hard on the 1873 map). A boatbuilding yard is indicated for the first time but we know that Shuttleworths had been operating there much earlier

The jetty is therefore (relatively) modern, the present hard probably likewise albeit on the site of an earlier hard.

The only public right of way is a footpath through the boatyard to the sea wall. There's no vehicular right of way

My gut feeling is that there is unlikely to have ever been a public right of access across the hard. It has the look of always having been a private facility to service the original timber yard which then became the boatyard

I can't post the maps here for copyright reasons (which I disagree with as the older maps are well out of copyright but if "caught" my Old-Maps account would be down the khasi and I need it for a long term research project

So I could join the RSA and then use the hard to go to the Plough & Sail :p?

Unfortunately being a member of the RSA gives you no special privileges. There are two sets of moorings administered by RSA members, but they also have negoitiated a fee to land and use the yard facilities which they pay on an annual basis.

At least one RSA member who keeps their boat at Paglesham, launches from Rochford in their dinghy to access their mooring. another member who was the bridge keeper at Potton used to launch from the bridge and come down the Violet.

Having just joined this forum sorry if some of this has been shown by others but as a member of the RSA at Paglesham I thought you would like an update.
he Vine area was put on sale around October 2017 by David Barke “he of Essex Marina?” When I tried to get more information the agents were over egging the site saying there were enough room for 10+ moorings? Also they were all in position “rooted in” and confirmed by GPS. When pushed that came down to the area was known and the coordinates were based on GPS readings not the moorings? Also it was a suggestion 10 mooring could be placed?
Price in the region of £20,000.00 (Hearsay)
Can send you details but it’s still for sale, Problem is no real depth of water at low springtides it has been seen to dry out.
Fishing vessels keep to the main channel to get into and out of Barling, straight through the area.
It also is the cut through to Havengore Bridge via Potton Bridge and Wakering Yard
No access except via paying the new owners at Pag an access fee or via Potton creek which dries out to Wakering Yard where I am sure the same applies.
Most in the RSA are not really interested, we did lease from the Crown for a short while 6 moorings up stream on the Roach but they also had depth of water issues. We are of the opinion that Barke possibly is trying still to cash in on what he thinks are valuable assets.

Hope this is of help?

Bigger issue at this moment is the continued closure of Havengore Bridge, QinetiQ has closed the bridge for nearly 3 months this winter due to repair problems due to breakdowns. It closed without notice on last Saturday when 4 vessels were due to use it. 4 turned back one to Rochford 2 to Southend but the fourth had to go around the ranges due to not being able to get back to Leigh on the tide. He had faulty nav lights and no real navigation equipment and then came up the Crouch in the dark, stopping at Essex Marina for the night. Not a very pleasant trip and totally uncalled for. As of Monday afternoon the bridge was still closed and yet no one had been notified of the closure.
