River Exe/Exmouth moorings

The only marina on the Exe is a small one within the former Exmouth Harbour and is pretty full with commercial angling and diving type boats.
You will need to gain plenty of local knowledge of the entrance channel which changes regularly and has a strong tidal stream both ebb and flood.
There are many moorings up and down the estuary at places like Starcross. Some are owned by the Powderham Castle Estate so you will be paying rent to them. I suggest you consider joining the Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club or the Exe Sailing Club at Exmouth where you will get all the info you need.

I'm afraid that the Cornishman is forgetting about the marina at Topsham. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It is well up-river, just below the motorway bridge. The river gets quite shallow there but you should be OK with a bilge keeler. Not sure if they will have space for you though.

Re: River Exe moorings

If you want the Topsham Marina talk to Mark Trout at "Trouts" 01392 873044. They are very good, but the "Marina" is very small and much of it dries out. It's a fair trip to reach the sea and mostly used by motorboats which can reach the sea a bit quicker than yachts. Trouts are very good when you need to launch your boat.

There's also Retreat Boatyard further upstream, but I don't know what facilities they have.

If you want swinging mooring talk to Phil Wills at Starcross Garage 01626 890225. He can rent one to you and is very helpful. He may also be able to sell you one.

Powderham won't rent a mooring for you, but they do act as brokers for people wanting to sell their mooring. Talk to Tim Faulkner (01626 890243) Not that it's relevant, but Tim has the wonderful job title "Steward of the Dues"!

There are a couple of moorings up for sale on the noticeboard at SFCC.

I don't know much about the Marina at Exmouth, but the access is limited because the bridge needs to be lifted. I don't like Marina's anyway!

There are others who can help with moorings, but that's a start.

A 26ft bilge keeler will be no problem on the Exe, just be prepared to run aground on the bar at low water springs if you don't keep over to the green buoys. There were 2 boats aground yesterday at lunchtime!
