Tied into marina in Kinsale for the night, for 28ft sailing yacht i was charged €29 for 1 night. I thought that "off season" there might be a better rate as I have been here many times in the summer with same charge per night. Do marinas not have off season rates? €29 for 1 night in December is rip for my boat off!

Why not - beautiful coastal cruising, superb anchorages, friendly people, cheap buses. Marina-hopping isn't the only way to see Ireland... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Since they got all the Eurodosh everything is apparently expensive in Eire. I sold my last boat to a man from Dublin who had a trailer made here to take it back. The trailer cost £2000 and he said it would be twice that in Eire.
 
I spent five weeks around SW Ireland. In all that time, only two days of sunshine. What did we have? Some mist, but mainly rain, rain and rain and ....
I will never go back either. And I was cruising in the 'traditional' way - anchoring in what might have been beautiful places, had there been the visibiity to see them.
Had some pretty good conversations with the local weather men though, who, had they looked out of their windows, would have seen a very different situation from the one they were describing over the radio. Lovely people, but ...

Brilliant. We have been trying to keep the whinging Sasanachs out of here for years - looks like we have finally succeded!
 
A number of years ago I was "sounded out" about a job by a internationally renowned architect based in London, His suggested wage rates were less than half what a clerk of works would get over here, and he could hardly believe the prices architects were charging over here for such basic and simple work,

Rip off is right.
 
is 29euro much different to the charge from a UK marina at the present xchange rate? wouldnt have thought so and since the paddies have garnered all that EU subsidy, they are better off than we are so the charge to them is probably quite cheap.

nobody to blame but ourselves if we are now poverty stricken
 
If you think Ireland a rip-off then I'd recommend avoiding Italy.

In France you have a very structured price-lists, with 3 bands, high-season, mid and low-season. Typically high season is x2 low season - your boat at this time of year would be about €15/night in French Med marinas.

Italian marinas would be nearer €50, and most wouldn't bother with low-season prices.
 
WE found ireland very expensive - though avoided marinas other than the occasional visit for fuel and battery top up charging. The most astonishing one was Lawrence Cove Marina on Beare island, which has good basic facilities but no village etc.. It ended up costing us 62 euros by the time I'd paid for marina, electricity hook up, showers, rubbish disposal (2 euros per small bag) and some washing (Impossible to do it yourself- have to pay for extortionate service wash, and as it was raining couldn't do by hand)....

Food was very expensive (though I'd never say that given UK prices, but Uk looked cheap by comparison)

But lots of free anchoring and mooring bouys, and gorgeous scenery (when we saw it through the rain and mist). This summer was probably not the best time to visit!
 
The attitude here in Ireland to sailors is similar to those in SE England in that marinas suffer from the 'squeeze 'em until they squeak and then squeeze 'em some more' syndrom. The Celtic Tiger has turned into a neutered cat - the ecomomy is possibly on the verge of collapse but the material expectations of the natives is still high ergo someone has to pay for it, evidently they have not heard of the law of diminishing returns! On the positive side, local councils have placed visitors' buoys in the most popular bays and these are free of charge (and usually empty) so a little bit of planning should reduce costs. Over the last few years I have also noticed July and August have become very wet and stormy months and May/June and Sep/Oct much more conducive to a plesant cruise. Northern Ireland is much cheaper for everything but the Marinas are still relatively expensive.
 
Great place to cruise, W Cork & Kerry was our regular cruising ground until we moved south.
Kinsale was around 25€ per night in 06 so 29€ isn't to bad, until you take into account you have to pay for water, the shower (which you have to cross the road for) the sweeping off of animal feed when the ship is discharging etc etc etc. Still Kinsale is a loverly place to be, as is most of that coast. Plenty of places to anchor as well.
RCYC when I was last there in June 07 we managed to get a good deal at 12€ per night all in, so no complaints there and we were there for a month getting some work done.
Food was horrendously expensive in the supermarkets even basics (fruit, veg' and meat) were 2-3 times the price we would have expected to pay in Wrexham or Chester. Shopping locally (in Xhaven) was even more expensive.

I think the global recession will sort some of that out, but you have to remember that Eire sailing has and always will be a very expensive and elitest sport hence the fact they get away with charging so much.

Still apart from all that,, its a great place to cruise, and you can do cheap if you are prepared to anchor and talk nicely to the locals (inc' the fishermen , who know all the cheap places!).

I'll go back, its a lot cheaper than the Med' in high season - I don't know of any 80+€ a night marinas there.
 
Its the Celtic Tiger .. Used to visit on a regular basis .. Everything was expensive but the locals did not seem to bother .. They drink less .. Buy drink at the supermarket .. Eat great steaks etc .. Had some great times over there but could not afford to live there .. Medical Insurance etc .. Its also very wet on the West Coast .. Thats why its so green ..
