Hello I am going to look at a couple of yachts in Plymouth. If I put in an offer, it will be subject to survey, sea trial, and also a rigging survey. The ordinary surveyor won't go up the mast. (usual I believe)
The rigging survey would involve a yacht rigging surveyor going slowly up the mast, and writing down what is up there, and looking for cracks, corrosion, damage, wear, and anything else appropriate.
He would then write down his findings in the form of a detailed, formal report, which I might use to haggle the price, and show to an insurance company.
Has anybody any recommendations for such a person in Plymouth? Many thanks Jerry.

My experience of the above, when trying to get a quote for a complete re-rig of a 41' boat (so a fair chunk of work). This was 4 years ago.
Hemisphere. 3 voicemails went unanswered. eventually got through to someone who said she'd get her boss to ring me back. Never heard anything more.
Eurospars: Unanswered voicemails. Eventually got the phone picked up and arranged for a guy to come and give me a quote. He never showed up.

Eventually used Allspars, although I did have to badger them every few days for 3 weeks and the boat was only 150m from their office. When they did give me a quote (expensive but I had few alternatives), the work was carried out on time, quickly, efficiently and thoroughly professionally. I've since used them for a couple of things and although their charges are on the high side I've felt I've got good value. They once (rapidly) diagnosed a problem which two other riggers had failed to. They also have decent workshop facilities which means they can fix things some less well equipped riggers might tell you need replacing.

...which is probably what you want from a survey. Thorough job with a quote for remediation which is if anything on the high side but won't have missed anything...

Thanks Laika for the thorough answer, you have steered me in a sensible direction, cheers Jerry
