Rigger recommendation Clyde

Sadly I have found MRS at Largs the least organised marine company I have ever tried to use.

Three times tried to use, each time had to chase multiple times - last time chased 5 or so times, was assured job had been done and arrived to go away for main trip, and job not done at all. Ardfern saved the day for us.

Hope this is not typical but our experience. Cannot comment on quality of work done !

There's an outfit at Ardrossan called Rigit, (or similar), with a workshop in the big shed there.
I've made a couple of minor purchases from them, and found them helpful, but I've not used them for making up rigging.
OTOH, my one contact with MRS was OK.

Reviving a thread from four years ago, but I have pretty much the same question.

Looking to replace the cap shrouds and was thinking of leaving the boat somewhere, flying home then flying in a week later to sail off. So I really want a choice of dependable riggers that won't leave me in the lurch. I'm hoping the Clyde is a good bet - also means I can take the boat over a few weeks before hand so they can see the job for themselves (and have no excuse when I turn up to get the job done).

+1 For Fairlie Riggers. As normal with these one man bands, they sometimes seem a bit hard to get hold of, so you just have to be persistent, but he does a good job at the end. Text him on his mobile is the best bet.

Ah now, that doesn't fill me with confidence. I'm looking to be able to fly in with a couple of crew and take the boat home, so I am wary of the typical 'professional' with the time management skills of a dormouse. How good is he at getting the job done when he said he would get it done?

In Scotland? yer joking. They don't have a word with quite the sense of urgency as "manana".

OK I exaggerate, but not much.

The good ones are busy, for a reason, you just have to wait until it's done.

http://www.mastandrigging.co.uk is based at Largs with offices at Kip Marina and will travel to the FOC Marinas and probably beyond. They have done a lot of work for me over the years and I find them good. Not sure why folks think there is a delay issue due to weather, it's not that bad.

Up in the Oban area Alba Sailing at Dunstafanage does rigging http://www.alba-sailing.co.uk/rigging/ and Ardfern Marina also offers rigging services http://www.ardfernyacht.co.uk/rigging.asp. Both companies may travel as well.

Tell them your commitments and they will tell you if they can do it in the required time frame. While I think the concept of reliable service has deteriorated, usually folks can accommodate a deadline like a crew flying in if it is reasonable and communicated upfront.

Thanks. I saw Ardfern recommended a few places, but the plan is to leave the boat, go and do some work to pay for it and fly back to pick the boat up. Thanks for the links.

I've had very good and friendly service from Niall Clarke rigging in Bangor, which is nice and handy for Belfast City airport.

Book your boat into Largs Marina and have mast lifted off. Remove cap shrouds and take them to Scotia Ltd.
http://scotiahandling.co.uk/wire-rigging/
Leave boat at Largs and go and earn some money.
Return with friends, collect new rigging from Scotia and refit to your mast.
Get Largs to step your mast and set your rigging.
Go sailing.
Why Largs, it's the most expensive on the Clyde for yard work and storage?
