My 2.5m dinghy needs replaced. It has been suggested to me that rather than a roll up plank type dinghy, I should consider a RIB of similar size. Anyone done this? What makes / prices are recommended?

Thanks for any advice.

We,ve just bought a Bombard AX300 folding RIB which will take up to an 8HP outboard and planes really well. This means you can either store it folded or fully inflated.

Top tip, like Viscount I have been looking at small RIBS recently. Where did you get yours from?

alternatively, a high pressure inflatable keel and airdeck as in the zodiac will give equivalent performance but will not need a crane to lift out of the water

I bought a rib as a tender. It was too big and too heavy. Slowed the boat by two knots. I've sold it and swapped for an air floor avon. Much lighter and perfectly adequate as a tender.

My advice is - don't - get an inflatable with a keel and air floor.

I have a Valiant 2.7 metre rib - suprisingly it lighter than many other types (including some airdecks as I recall - weight was an issue for me). It will take a 10hp engine and costs in the region of £1k (maybe slightly less). IMHO far superior to airdecks, wooden floors etc

Interesting about swapping rib for air deck as I am considering doing the same thing with mine. My rib weighs 37kgs against say 30 or so for an airdeck and I am unsure whether this will make much differance to my Corniche's trim and performance.

Next weekend I am leaving the rib behind at the mooring so will assess the diferance in the above without it.

I would rather keep it as it is very solid and stable but main boat performance more important to me.

7kg is not going to have an iota of difference to your boat, doubt that even 37kg if you leave it at home is going to make a huge difference - equivalent to a lightweight person sitting at the rear of the boat.

You'd be better working at the diet, probably save more weight that way. Or burn a gallon of fuel.

Nick,

I had a 2.8m Avon Rib with a 5hp Honda 4 stroke outboard on the back of a Nimbus 3003 (30' 195hp single engine). I binned the rib for an air deck with a Mercury 3hp 2 stroke and the weight loss was significant and it made a significant difference to the trim and therefore speed of the Nimbus. (It was on snap davits on the transom). (Yes I know the rib was FAR too big for the boat now - but at the time I was new to this game and this was just one of many expensive and stupid mistakes that I made!)
