Marine transmissions are for some reason called "reverse gear".

Your gearbox oil cooler is above the gearbox which cools the gearbox oil pumped from the gearbox casing through the Cooler and back to the gearbox.

Because without the gear box the boat would only go ahead, or forwards. The gear box allows you to also go astern, or reverse.

I suspect VP understands the function of a marine transmission.........Neutral is also a pretty useful function.

Think the point was that to refer to a marine transmission as "reverse gear" was simply nuts. And it follows that the associated cooler is transmission lube oil cooler. Not the misleading term reverse gear cooler.

Raggy nobs often refer to marine tranny as reverse gear..Like the guy calling me to discuss his motor on his portable telephone??

And as for 'It used to be "STOP ENGINES" and wait for the crunch.....

More like ringing "SLOW ASTERN" you stop the engine, engage the reverse cam, wind in the fuel wheel, go to to give her a kick of air, only to get "SLOW AHEAD" so you start all over again!

By that time the crunch has happened. LOL

Volvo Penta, maybe others as well, call them "reverse gear" therefore its only natural that owners will use the same terminology.

Logical name anyway because that's what they are there for ... to provide reverse gear.

"Trannies" are people who wear the clothes of the opposite sex
