Having had a Ford XLD 1600 fitted in the boat I found that the throttle would creep back. The lever has been tightened up and is very stiff but it still creeps back.
On inspection there is a big return spring on the throttle lever on the injection pump. Do you think it will be ok to remove this spring or is it there for any other reason other than pulling the lever back?

Also have the XLD as modified by Mermaid. Throttle does tend to close if cable etc not adjusted. Should not have a stiffness in the lever if correctkly adjusted.
One of the springs functions is to keep the fuel position at idle when stopped or if the cable breaks etc.
In the MN the Crew painted the 1,500kva diesel geny once when stopped with fuel racks full open. When she started the fuel remained full on 'cause they had painted the ful pump racks as well- result pistons and cylinder head debris all over the engine room - happy days

I used to have a Ford with the 1600 diesel engine but I can't remeber what sort of return spring was fitted. Certainly on the boat you don't want a spring that is stong enough to shut the throttle like you do on a car and you don't want to mke the engine control stiff. Perhaps a lighter spring is called for. One which is just strong enough to return the pump to its idle setting if the conrol becomes disconnected.
