A few years old but hardly worn yesterday leaked all over not just seams in just 3/4 hours of admittedly heavy rain. Will re-proofing work on this (100% nylon) and any recommendations as what to use-or just bin it, but replacements are expensive so I would like to avoid the expense if possible.

I’m doing my wife and I’d waterproofs today as it happens - currently got the machine on for the second time doing another 90° long wash to remove all residual detergent from the machine.

Once this is completed I will wash both the jacket and sally’s separately in nikwash tek wash and hang to drip dry. Then low heat tumbie to reactivate the waterproof coating.

Tomorrow I’ll hang in the garden on the washing line and liberally spray with fabsil gold to help make water repellent.

Hopefully that should do the trick!

Contact Gill for their comments. Mine got assessed by them and replaced.

Their own waterproofing spray is as good as I have used.

Take care with 'tumble dry' comments. Might be suitable for some, but Gill said to me to definitely not do this.

Always wash or rinse after use.

We have used the Graingers system for a few years on both Goretex walking coats and Musto oilskins (bought last century!)
Was with Wash & Repel, get near dry then spray some Repel on then short go in the tumble dryer.
Works for us. Walking coat finally fell apart too much to repair after 20 years but was still waterproof to the end

Thanks for all the advice about re-proofing. Before sending off for re-proofing products I thought it would be wise to turn it inside out to make sure the seams were not beyond repair. Many of the seams had come apart but even worse the coating on the shoulder and front had completely broken down and was flaking off in large pieces which explained why I got so wet. So the OS2 jacket is scrap and I would not touvh gill stuff with a bargepole after seeing how this jacket has deteriorated. I have probably only worn it a dozen times over 5 years and it has been always stored away dry. This deterioration is clearly age related with such little use.

Any recommendations for a budget sailing jacket that works- I am not bothered about breathable fabric, heavy PU proofed nylon/polyester will be fine. As I have a doghouse this normally gives me good protection from the weather except downwind and with other expenses at the moment I do not want to splash out!

I have reverted to Guy Cotten non breathable, they are waterproof hard wearing and the wind doesn't whistle through them as it does with breathable's.

I can get my hands on some old fertiliser bags from the farm down the road. ;)

Thanks but I suppose individual interpretations of "budget" can be very different. I think Guy Cotton is quality but with a

There is something to be said for breathable fabrics if you spend 12+ hours in them. I have a selection of waterproof gear for sailing, walking, cycling and there is little to beat straightforward old fashioned 3 layer goretex material. I have two that are over 30 years old. The 2 layer materials or those with a loose inner layer invariably delaminate or break up. Buy good quality but basic walking or climbing gear in 3 layer goretex. Wash very carefully and as little as possible, if ever.

I have my eye on Fladen waterproofs when my current set of seagos finally die. I wore a pair whale watching in Northern Iceland the other year in horrendous weather and was comfortably warm and dry in them. They look to be <£200 a set too.

Thanks for ideas-going to try one of these. PVC on cotton with welded seams. All the sailing jackets I have had, the taped seams have failed so at least will avoid that. I guess it is fishermens gear, not stylish but neither am I! £83 from Gaelforce looks a snip.

My old Henri Lloyd breathable salopettes are done for, I think. There’s a sort of grey plasticky membrane bonded to the inside surface, and large areas are peeling away. I don’t think it’s worth trying to treat the shell material to make them waterproof. The jacket, bought at the same time is still fine. I guess it just hasn’t been used as much.

So I’ll get some sort of low end or mid market replacement. @C08 what did you think of that Gael Force coat?

Ok I’ve a new gill os2 jacket was £500 a couple of years ago. It’s alright but it’s not really breathable so you get wet and cold in it after a few hours.
I bought a Tresspass 5000nm jacket for £50 quid and blimey it’s great for sailing in. Got caught in more than a monsoon and dry as a bone. You can move in it and it’s comfy to sail in. It’s my preferred sailing jacket. The Gill os2 stays hung up with it’s uncomfortable chin thing.
Don’t always get what you pay for. Bright orange so looks the part as well which is most important!!

Anybody else think Goretex a complete waste of time and money? it just leaks. I've tried reproofing with NIkwax stufif with no affect; if anything made it worse.

I'm trying Fabsil which worked a treat on my Flying Fifteen's cover.
