Replacing rigging (Scotland)

Hi all

Does anyone out there have any knowledge of replacing your standing rigging, the boat is in Argyll. Does anyone know of a company they would recommend or any company they would recommend not using?

I am hoping we can move the rigging to a company in Glasgow or the Clyde rather than getting someone to go to the boat to do the replacing.

There is MRS, Mast and Rigging Services, at Kip Marina. They did a small job for me very promptly and at a reasonable cost. On that limited basis, I would recommend talking to them about your requirements.
Add, they are also at Largs, but I think their main workshop is Kip.

Another vote for MRS at Kip, they have just completed replacing all my standing rigging, fitted a new track on my mast for the spin pole and fitted a new furlex for my stay sail.
Could not fault them, very very helpfull.

I used MRS at Kip / Largs and got a very friendly and efficient service. Mind you, the new rigging, made as a direct copy of the old, didn't remotely fit and I had to have every stay remade later. Not sure how that happened - by the time I discovered the originals had been binned. I'd use them again, but I'd check the stuff they made very carefully.

Nicolson-Hughes at Rosneath will also do rigging, thought they are a fair bit more expensive than MRS: £7.50 for a 4mm talurit eye as against a fiver.

Rigging replacement

Inevitably the cheapest approach is for you to remove the old standing rigging and take it to the rigging company. It will cost to have them come to your boat.
You need to assess if any changes in length are needed ie slightly longer to have rigging screws more engaged or slightly shorter if the screws are a bit close so limiting tension range. Don't get too carried away as wire rigging can stretch. Just carefully label each wire and ask for identical replacement.

I assume the mast is down and laid up. If it is still up then you have to replace wires one by one using a halyard to substitute for removed stay. And of course you have to go up to disconnect the stay.

mast is down so i definitely need to get this done this winter, have gone to the companies you have recommended to get quotes now
