I'm doing the budget for the new boat purchase and one thing for sure is the front screen on the canopy along with 2 x small quarter windows in the side of the canopy are sun damaged and will need replacing. Is there a mobile repair outfit in and around Southampton that can do the work to remove the existing windows and do a quality job at fitting new plastic? Some stitching may also need replcing and/or seems waterproofing too as there's a leak from the canopy in to the boat above the helm position.

If no mobile outfit exists that can come to the boat to effect the repair, is there a place I can take the canopy to? I don't think there's a tonneau cover with the boat so obviously the latter is the least preferred option

thanks Gary

Chris Harris at Harris Hoods tends to Rafiki's needs www.harrishoods.co.uk Not very handy for Southampton, and I'm sure there are suppliers down there to do the trick. I think replacing the bits that you need will be circa £100 ish.

If you can't find a local supplier, Chris knows the S28 well, and has done 2 or 3 replacement canpopies to my knowledge.

Gary, I used a1 covers at swanwick , just past entrance to east lands boatyard, Karen did a great job replacing all my canopy windows, a zip, lengthened some parts where the poppers didn't meet etc due to shrinkage. 7 windows various sizes etc £300. I'd use her again no problem.

re windows

Hi Gary, cover care in Thornham marina,01243 372759 not sure you may have to take it there.

Thanks Paul, that sounds just the ticket:cool:

Looks like Paul's come up with a good local option mate, thanks all the same

+1 for Karen, used her services four times now and she is very professional and inexpensive

I'll give Jim @ JB covers my vote Gary.

Top job and very reasonable prices. Local to the hamble.... PM if you want his number??

He's replaced several of my windows previously and my current canopy was made by him over last winter. Tbh it's been a godsend this year with the weather!!

I used JB too and he came out to my boat and took the covers away and delivered them back with all the windows replaced. I wasn't there either, all done during the week whilst I was working. Very easy and convenient.

+1 for JB

Used JB a couple of times for various repairs and window replacements, as said before he picked them up fixed them and refitted, top job. He has just done the new canopies for DK2 which look superb.

Another vote for Karen @ A1

I recently priced up the cost of new covers for my boat and then noticed A1 were recommended on this forum.

I contacted Karen (07921458818) and immediately realized they were the right company for the job, enthusiastic, sensible completion date and well priced.
Based inland close to Hamble which helps keep the cost down as they are not having to pay extortionate marina rates but very convenient for Hamble, Southampton, Portsmouth and Chichester.
First Karen called to see me to measure up and to fit a temporary plastic pattern.

Once fitted we marked out in black marker exactly where the windows, zips and doors were going.

It surprised me how much time went into the making of the pattern , there were several trips required as the pattern cant be fitted during windy conditions and we are all aware how windy it is around coastal marinas.

Due to the windy conditions Karen made a full pattern and then fitted it to my boat before making the covers from the pattern.

A huge amount of man (lady) hours go into the covers.

A lot of added detail was introduced by Karen, easy quick straps on the doors and windows to enable rolling them up.

Extra straps were added as options (use during the windy winter, remove for the summer).

The flybridge cover was fitted with a 'support pole pocket' , anyone with a flybridge cover knows how tricky it is to keep the support poles upright, A1 covers stitch a pocket/sleeve which the mushroom top pole sites in and can ride up and down freely, a very clever idea.

There is a strap which can be used over the winter that goes all the way over the top and is stitched in to avoid friction burns.

The windscreen cover also has winter straps attached to stop it blowing away during the winter gales.

The cockpit canopy has a window that crosses an awning pole, A1 covers make quick release Velcro covers to wrap around the stations to prevent burning/browning.

Excellent covers, very good quality remarkable value.
Wind screen Covers (mesh or canvas) from £200
Canopies from £800
Flybridge covers from £500

I know this is not what you requested but many years ago I had a sports car where the rear, plastic window had yellowed. It was suggested that I polish it up with a slightly abrasive cleaner like Turtle Wax. The improvement was incredible.
It may be a useful stopgap measure.

It's the salt that scratches the clear plastic, always use plenty of water when cleaning , do the insides too. I apply polish to my windows as it helps the water to run off. Always roll the covers to store if you can. Don't fold the window sections .

be particularly careful this time of year. The colder acrylic gets the less pliable it is and the more it marks, when cold turns to freezing beware! Acrylic will snap/shatter very easily....

thanks again guys the process in the pictures Daka's posted look very thorough so have given Karen a call initially leaving her a voicemail to call me back... very cheery sounding lady on her voicemail message which bodes well
