Replacing backlight with LEDs in Raymarine E-Series E120 display

Just put a meter onto the power cable.

Most boats have some sort of battery gauge also.

I stopped doing this a while ago but 24v systems don’t work with my LED set up.

I tried all kinds of things and ended up using a separate back light and dimmer switch on for a commercial boats 24v set up.

Thank you for the very detailed instructions and tips. I have to test the functions at home. Which 12 V power supply can I use? 12 V but how many watts and amps?

Thanks to the comments and the videos on YouTube. I did the "repair" this afternoon in 5 hours.

Material used:
1 x Infineon Technologies IRLB8721PBF MOSFET 1 N-Canal 65 W TO-220AB
1 x Arcol MRA0207 100RBTA15 MRA0207 100RBTA15 Metal film resistor 100 Ω 15 W
Some of Arthelme 51541434 LED strip 12 V 5000 mm cool white 5 m

I bought a digital soldering station for up to 480 °C and a desoldering suction pump. The pump is very helpful for removing the old parts.
To do the desolder I had to set the temperature to 480 °C and needed a screw driver to lever the pins out.

I used the tips of Murve about the LED strips. I'm very happy with the result and saved a lot of time. It dosn't look beautiful, but it works.
The corners I fixed with hot glue so they can not get lose during the time.

To test the unit I used a power supply with 12V 1.5A 18.0W

Hi guys. Great thread this one!
I have a E80 with the same issue. LED replacement is all done, but not working at all. LED's work fine direct off the capacitor, but not via a Mosfet. Fairly confident the PWM signal has failed on this one. Does anyone have any guidance on how to work around that problem?

without the mosfet the LEDs will just be getting 12v all the time. you need that to control the dimming function

Yeah sorry maybe that wasn’t clear. I have a MOSFET installed and wired as explained and get no power to the LEDs at all. I have 12v at the capacitor. When I rewire the led direct to the capacitor it works, so the LEDs are fine and the power at the capacitor it is fine, but the FET doesn’t seem to be driving. I’ll dig out my scope tomorrow and see if the PWM signal is present at all, but assuming it’s not, have you got any information to help fault find a lack of a PWM signal?

From past experience the pwm on the power board can fail

The only way to rectify it is to replace the whole board.

I’ve had this happen twice over the years so it is possible.

I don’t have a scope or knowledge how to check but I tried every way to wire it without any luck.

The only solution to sort without a replacement board is literally to fit a dimmer switch
