Hello me old shipmates,

Any suggestions would be very welcome.
I am attempting to find a standard teak deck template for a Bavaria 40 (2001)
Being a production boat I would assume such a thing exists

The back story is the original factory fitted teak deck has been removed and ready for a synthetic teak deck to be fitted.

Many thanks in advance

Having just had a synthetic deck fitted, I wouldn't hesitate getting it professionally templated, get it wrong and you're looking at an expensive mistake, templating wasn't that expensive.

Pretty sure that Bavarias of that period were laid as individual strips rather than pre formed to a template (unlike post 2010 or so). Even if a template was used highly unlikely that it still exists after over 20 years and at least 5 changes in ownership of the company. Getting real teak preformed panels made up is difficult now because of the restrictions on new teak, but you might try here moodydecking.co.uk/teak-decking They, or any of the many fake teak companies would make their own templates from your boat rather than rely on somebody else's.

As suggested, go on the Bavaria forum bavariayacht.org/forum/index.php and inevitably you will find many threads about removing, repairing, replacing teak decks from that period. The general consensus is NOT to replace with either teak or fake teak but restore the underlying GRP non slip, or if this has been damaged in removal of the old, clean up, fair and coat with a non slip paint or Kiwigrip. This will enhance the value of the boat whereas you will never get back the cost of a new laid deck on such an old boat.

If anyone has such templates now, it would likely be one of the larger plastic teak suppliers. Even then, I’d imagine most bin the templates after each job.

Judging by chats with a couple of pontoon neighbours who recently had Flexiteek jobs done on similar size boats, it sounds like prices are approaching five figures. A 40 Bene was £7500 a few years ago, but add on a bit for inflation and (apparently still…) high demand vs production slots and it could be a big cost, as T. said above.

A big risk not getting the actual boat templated, if deck fittings/fillers have been added/removed/changed, you could be making an expensive error. I just had my deck fitted last week and really happy with the detailing.

I suspect £7.5k is slightly light as to price and you might be looking for nearly twice that given inflation and exchange rates but I am very pleased with our factory fitted version on a 12.8m boat. The boat we did a test sail on around 2015 had retrofit on plastic decks and still looks good. Many Hanse imported into hamble point are retrofitted with Flexiteak products and the fitters I watched one day rolling it out seem skilled so if you are minded to commit funds I would look at professional fitting but I guess it depends on how much of a craftsman you are and time etc. clearly many have taken old Hallberg 342 etc as well as Bavs and ripped off the teak and painted so you might want to look at one of these. I was speaking to an oyster 406 owner whose teak was tired and he had in mind same project so many seem to do it.

Good advise..... Upon reflection a nice beautifully finish with Kiwi Grip or International non slip

Unbelievable the prices being charged for a very simple job that requires no skill other than care during the job.
Excellent business opportunity for you, then. Let is know how you get on.

I templated and fitted my Permateek deck myself, and had the sections made professionally. Not a difficult job. OK this was for a smaller boat but the principle is the same. The Permateek agent supplied the templating material and instructions, it's important to use the right materials for this to avoid errors from stretching.
