What sources off renewable energy are there on boats? i know off solar panels and the little windmills but is there anything else? some sort off wave generator?

I'd be very impressed if they manage to find a way to use wave power as the boat moves due/through the waves and in relation to them, hence wont be fighting against them in a way that could have vertical turbines or other exotic systems featuring elaborate venturis etc produce power through this process.

Happy to be corrected as always

yes solar panels and windmills are there, not terribly efficient but can be helpful

Solar and wind are the main ones. There are also water generators which use your forward motion to generate power, but these are really only appropriate for long-distance sailing boats - it would be supremely pointless on a motorboat!

Frankly, apart from keeping the batteries topped up on a small one when unattended, any kind of solar/wind/etc power on a motorboat seems pointless to me. You all have stonking great engines you have to run whenever you move, surely you have all the power you need?

One idea a friend of mine had whilst moored in a fast flowing tidal stretch.

Harness a generator to run off the propshaft and use tidal power that way.
His prop was turning quite fast with the tidal flow, and with considerable force, such that he couldn't stop it (hydraulic gearbox) when he tried to wrap things round it and tighten them - he was worried it would take his arm off!

OK so it doesn't work in many places, but for all those moored on tidal rivers with a reasonable tidal range it could provide significant energy, consistently.

Given that most boats spend most of their time moored up, they could store up lots of energy if sufficient amounts could be stored (without taking up all the accommodation space with batteries!)

V, sailing is really great fun. I have sailed most things from a windsurfer to an ocean racer, and I love them all. Well, I have to confess, I will only sail a windsurfer these days in the med, or somewhere of a similar climate! In my younger days I would break the ice to sail! Madness.

I don't get this us and them thing, raggies and mobo's. There is a time and place for all of us.

i saw a really neat build... 4in pvc pipe made into a closed loop square shape. Filledwith crete. balloon type jug on the top, attached via cableto the 'anchor'. as the waves moved through the area, the balloon would move up and down, pulling on the anchor. add a mechanical arm, which is attached to a dynamo type genny, rectify it, and you could in theory trickle charge something off of waves.

dont remember where i saw it, don't know if its patended, but its a wave genny. :)

practical? thats up to you.

sure, didn't mean to sound like that, I enjoy the silence of sailing once the engine is off, brilliant. Not bother with listing, so not a problem at all. Half my sea going friends are sailing (almost all of them competitive in local races)

I have to admit that my main problem with sailing crafts is the spatial layout, don't like being in the dungeon even in the med! I could live with 45ft sailing cat, but wont get one for 35K (estimate for MiToS back in the water cost...)
I'll shut up as we're drifting yet again
cheers

Energy production from waves is a reality but is still under development and so far isn't ready for use on a boat. Time will show - the source seems unlimited like waterfalls and dams and ingenious folks are 'researching'.

Or even crossing the Pacific on wave powered boat (at up to 2.9 knots..):
