Removing the redundant engine box on an o.b. Shrimper 19?

I'm posting on the offchance someone knows the answer to this, any info appreciated. Most Cornish Shrimper Mk2 boats have inboard diesels. These are more under the cockpit than in the cabin, and access is via a large raised hatch cover which slopes down from the companionway area into the cockpit. If you choose the outboard version Shrimper 19 Mk2 like the one I just bought, you don't get the inboard diesel, but you still get the engine cover. If you want a big covered locker just there, that's great. If like me, you'd prefer a big open unobstructed cockpit, then I'm wondering how easy it is to remove the engine 'box' and fit the cover flat on the cockpit floor. The engine box surround appears to be fixed by screwing it onto the vertical cockpit sides then masticking round the edges. I believe removing it has been done to a few boats - does anyone know any more about this please?

You may find your specific question is answered on the Shrimper forum? Shrimpertalk Forum
I might indeed thanks, but it's not there :) That forum seems to be very poorly read and posted these days. I might try WhatsApping my local Shrimper Owner group, but I get the impression that's not really what WhatsApp is for, It's a great medium for short snappy info, but like most social media, the format's not great for anything longer.

Being a blundering fool I would just attack the cover with angle grinder and chisels to remove. It must be removable to be useful for engine access. Filling the hole level with cockpit floor will be a project however. I would suggest a ply backing mounted from underneath to take GRP layed on top. Or better still carbon fibre mat. if you remove the plywood after grp has hardened you may find the panel is too flexible. In which case some strengthening ribs will be needed. A terrible job to fit upside down. Perhaps use wood or pre molded GRP battens. But then I have never seen a Cornish Shrimper so good luck ol'will

I too find the locker in the companionway a pain and hoping you have since received advice from somebody who has successfully removed it. Any news?
