Right... first request for advice tonight.....

What is best for cleaning off sticky marks from old lettering on the gel coat of the hull? I have removed the old lettering in preparation for the new, but it has left some horrible marks that soap and water won't remove.

Any tips of the trade?

Wow... I'm impressed guys... it hasn't been 10 minutes since I posted and I already have 4 suggestions.... cheers guys /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm a fan of Magic Eraser (made by JML) which is a non-toxic sponge made with melamine fibres that you just wet and rub out marks- fantastic at getting sticky stuff, scuffs etc of gel coat and for cleaning garden furniture and UPVC windows (not that I have them). Seen it for sale in Woolies and Robert Dyas and elsewhere (coopersofstortford). There are similar products apparently in Tesco and other supermarkets that travel by other names. Comes in a block and you just slice of off a bit and use cold water. Cleanest topsides ever this year.

The glue trace that is left behind is just a form of contact adhesive, and will wipe off clean with a drop of petrol or white spirit, neither will harm your gelcoat, follow up with a bit of T-Cut or similar, to ready the surface for your new lettering.

There is no need to buy fancy products to do the job.

These are excellent.

Great to have onboard as they have hundreds of other uses, cleaning worktops, cookers, engines, grease, sealer, paint and hands

Agree acetone may not be a brilliant idea but no harm done in my experience if just used to wipe the surface clean.

"Sticky Stuff Remover", a citrus based product, is excellent for removing the sticky residued left by self adhesive labels etc. Ours came from Kleeneze but all good hardware stores will have the same or similar. Well worth keeping a bottle.

I confirm all that you have said, been advacating them on this forum for two years.
I also had a couple of black marks on topside gellcoat, spent a forutne in chandlery on various cleaners, with no succes, then I tried the Magic Sponge (2 for £1) dipped sponge in a little fresh water and rubbed marks for a minute and just like magic they disappeared.
