Removing rust from stainless steel

Hi - any recommendations for removing rust stains from stainless steel? I've used Osfo in the past which worked well but I've run out and can't seem to find anywhere selling it. Anyone know where I can get it or of any similar products? Thanks

Go to chemist and get oxalic acid powder and make it yourself, very cheap

Lidl lime scale remover which is phosphoric acid, or hydrochloric acid brick cleaner.

I find WD40 on a rag removes pretty well anything and it saves having to buy yet another product.

"Solvol Autosol" available from any good car shop Halfords etc. I do all my stainless with it at the beginning of season and remains gleaming for rest of season as it leves a protective coating on.

Go to the "pound shop" and get "astonish" oven cleaner also good for getting rust stains out of fibreglass

Also from Wilkos and Lakeland Ltd mail order. tested by PBO I think and found to be benign on gelcoat (chemically) but effective.

there is oxalic acid in the "part 2" of two-part teak cleaner from wessex chemicals, googlable on the web.

Or buy a stainless steel cleaner from the chandlery. Which smells like brasso, looks like brasso - but is ever so slightly more expensive. I know 'cos I bought some /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

To passivate the S/S and prevent the rust coming back I would recommend you use a pickling / passivating paste as available from your local welding supply house. The above remidies are fine to clean the surface but are unlikely to be much benifit in the long term depending on where the rust came from in the first place.

KIWI mate of mine a stainless steel polisher , swears by spraying hairspray on the steel once you have got the rust off
