Removing glue from under numbers

Many thanks for the helpful suggestions, gratefully noted. It seems that I have raised some hackles because I have heinously dared to 'resurrect' an old thread. I honestly didn't think that it was such a big deal; apparently I was wrong.

If you want to see hackles raised try posting a sentence containing the words "Bavaria", "off", "keel" and "fallen"!

I used Goo Gone citrus based so safe for sails and you don't even need to wear gloves. Available from eBay to remove most of the glue from my main sail numbers and corn flower rubbed on the sail removed the remainder of the residue.
Takes some time unfortunately!

I don't see a problem with resurecting old posts. As said the best advice is tor try to avoid as far as possible changing numbers on sails. I seem to get away with numbers only on main sail. I have used acetone with no apaprent damage to the sail. (dacron). The problem with acetone is that it evaporates so quickly that it will dissolve the glue then evaporate leaving the glue behind. The only way is lots of clean rags so a clean rag and clean acetone for each wipe.
As said you can often scrape the softened glue off (debulk) But in the end it will take a lot of patience and solvent.
if you are concerned about sail damage (i have not tried acetone on nylon) start with a milder solvent like alcahol, turps or petrol.
The problem is that any glue left will just attract dirt like crazy. good luck olewill

I'm in the process, right now as I type this (just taken a break!), of removing the red GBR 3474 and associated red FF logo from my Flying Fifteen sails and replacing them with K797 and the logo in black.

First letter off was a disaster...loads of red residue...TBH it was almost as if the whole letter was still there. 30 mins of scraping and rubbing with white spirit had me mentally calculating the time this would take...not good!

Solution...a hair dryer. I warmed each letter up and kept the hair dryer on them as I peeled...each letter off in a minute with absolute minimal residue.

Just don't tell SWMBO...I need to persuade her that the slight smell of white spirit must actually be one of her hair potions...
