Now having a small sailing boat with an outboard fitted on a bracket on the stansom has anyone heard of a cordless remote control for the engine.

When coming into a marina it would be so much easier to have a hand held control of the engine rather than having to lean over the back end to change gear and adjust the throttle while waggling the tiller.

I've only got a 5hp engine wich doesn't accept remote cables and, even if I could, I don't really want to fit cables and lever to clutter up what is quite a small cockpit.

I know of the wireless remotes of autopilots but have never heard of such a device I'm suggesting

Have you been dreaming?
A remote would need controls fitted to the motor and a power source as well as servos. So cables would be easier.
I have extended the gearshift lever which has enormously improved the control of the motor.

Lakesailer,

I agree with what is required - but the engine could be the power source and then it only needs the servo to operate the gear lever and maybe the throttle - by the way I've the same engine and the boats on Windermere.

Well. I await your prototype. I think it would be a enormously complicated undertaking.
I have a design to connect my extended lever to a boat mounted control. But the lever works so well I'm not going to bother. I also leave the tiller handle nearly upright so the throttle is not too difficult to reach either.

(The chain is now all high tech. I've put a motorbike cable lock on!)

I once removed the throttle from the outbord tiller and replaced the cable to the carb with a lawnmower speed control, a bit like a seagull throttle lever, which I then screwed to the side of the boat tiller. It worked quite well but I still had to lean over the back to operate the gear lever.

If you have the same engine you'll know that the production gerashift is a pain in the arse. Always going straight through neutral. The extended lever solves all that. Perfect, delicate, fingertip control.
