Hi Bluevelvet,

Don't know where you are based (bio's a bit thin!) but I recently enquired about prices for re-chroming my winches in Plymouth. I haven't had a chance to take them in yet, but was quoted a guide price of £30.00 each for 'big' winches, and £20.00 each for 'small' winches! I couldn't get what big and small represented over the phone, but they were happy to firm up the price once they'd seen them.

My best guess is that sizes up to say 40's would be small, and anything above 'big', but this is just my impression. One thing did surprise me. My two halyard winches have a sort of plastic rim round the top, that cannot be removed. I expected that this would preclude any chance of this pair being chromed, but apparently, this causes no problems and there would be no damage.

Ok, I don't really understand the process itself, but expected the pre-treatment to be pretty anti-social to plastic!

Certainly they were happy to confirm that the finished product would make them as new, so I think I'm going to have them done. Let you know how things turn out, though probably won't get round to getting them done for a few weeks yet.

Good sailing!

Where are you based? I know a place in Barnsley that do this work cheaply.

If this location is OK let me know and I'll dig out an old receipt and pass the details on to you.

Regards.

Peter.

I'd be very surprised if £30 gets a winch properly chromed. It might do for an ornament, but the sort of heavy chrome used on a winch is a different matter to the normal cosmetic skim done in most plating shops. Be careful and check the job thoroughly. I doubt they can quote this accurately without seeing the thing. How do they know if it needs coppering first, if so how much and how much cleaning, masking and preparation? You'll be well stuffed if they plate inside the bearing bore by mistake...

Assuming these are Lewmar winches, and you are in, or near to, the UK - have you tried contacting Lewmar? About 3-4 years ago they had a pair of very old 16s rechromed for me to the original spec. Can't remember how much, but it seemed very reasonable at the time, and the winches looked like new when they came back. Speak to the technical support guys if you want to try this route.
