i like the comment about the paint stripper in the whisky bottle. Will remember that one. Many years ago I used to work at a local entertainment venue and we had problems with stuff getting nicked from cars. Radios and stuff. So as we had access to Maroons( RNLI Type) we set up a car with a TV on the back seat and wired the Maroon across the on/off switch. Never had any problems after that!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, that sort of revenge appeals at times.
Many years ago my sister worked at a company and one of her colleagues kept visiting their department while they were away and just stole their biscuits and snacks. Soooo we got revenge by baking some 'ginger biscuits', ahem well there was some ginger in them, quite a lot actually, and mustard and pepper and I was dumb enough to just try a small bit and thought my mouth would never cool down. Funny thing was the biscuit stealing stopped soon after that special selection had been raided. . . . Wish I had seen it!

I love the idea about killing the thugs but on reflection would that be a good idea. A friend of mine owns a chippie. One night a fellow walked in with a pistol, my friend who was holding a chip basket hit the guy across the face with the first swipe and disarmed him with the second. The police came and read my friend his rights as there might be proceedings against him should the thief press for action.
Another example is the farmer who shot a burgular and did time - he should have been given a medal.
We are not allowed to protect ourselves or our property and the police don't want to. You should witness things Here in Ulster when there is any serious disturbance the police run the other direction. A short time ago a mob rensacked a local village, not a police man in sight for 3 hours. They were sitting 1 mile from the action waiting for it to clear. If it was Spain they would have kicked the pans in on every trouble maker and not a word
Sorry but GRRRRR.
I have a simple remedy, put their heads in a bucket of water three times and take them out twice.

Ref your friends horrible situation, my feelings are that the general public, at least here in England, no recent experience of NI, are supportive of people who defend themselves and their property.

It is outragous to be cautioned for defending yourself against somebody brandishing a gun, it should be ok to deck him where he stands by whatever means, with NO questions.
It is the Judiciary who get all tetchy because somebody has the audacity to to their job more effectively than them. The laws are supposed to protect the public, for much of the time they dont. Some juries are very sympathetic but it is a gamble. Caution has to be the guide.
