Reeds PBO Small Craft Almanac 2011

Are you going right around Britain? .. if so I would go for Reeds. There is a lot more info in Reeds. If I was just Channel port hopping the PBO. That stated I can't remember the exact coverage of PBO

South West and Bristol channel really. Maybe further afield next year. Just need tide times, heights and the little direction chartlets that are great for passage planning. I find the full Reeds is big thing to stow on a 30 footer!

IIRC the PBO almanac mainly comprises tide tables, strategic waypoints and general information on weather forecasts, etc. It does not contain in any detailed information on destinations (harbours, river, etc) so if you can get up todate information from another source then it may well be fine but on balance I would fork out for the full Reeds offering.

Controversial suggestion for economy boating!!!!
Pick up a second -hand copy of Reeds (within the last three years) and invest in a current set of tide tables. The port details don't change much over that time scale.

Reeds too big for a 30 footer

Nora man!

how much junk do you have aboard your 30 footer?

Dylan - the slug - 18 foot

I buy reeds one year and PBO the following year to keep the cost down
Think the tidal diagrams in PBO are better

Can lend you older annotated Pilot for Bristol Channel and charts if you like - pm me

In that case why not buy the loose-leaf version of the full Reeds and leave the pages that you don't need at home?

I am trying to figure out what is the actual coverage of both Reed and PBO almanacs and all can find is vauge description saying "from the tip of Denmark to Gibraltar" or something similar. What I am unsure about is if Norway, Shetlands and Faroes are covered.

And if anyone could advise which Pilot book is better for Shetlands - CCC or Imray?

I have the Reeds Channel version - not the PBO one, but the full Reeds containing only the pages relevant to the English Channel. If they do a similar cut-down one for your area, it might be a good compromise?
