Red Diesel - back on TV news this am

Re: Heating oil.

Well my Diesel Heating and cooker run off the same tank as my diesel engine on the boat, so what are they going to do about that. The reason I have all diesel is safety over gas and ease as only one fuel onboard. It was also more expensive to buy the equipment but with two seasons of Red I thought it would even out. If I lose Red completely it will be a real shame. On the other hand a local boatyard told me to add another filler cap with 'Engine Diesel' on it and then get a cap with 'Heating Diesel' on my main tank. Then I could fill up at will /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Many other have diesel heating/cooking so this will be a real dillema.

I am also concerned about long-term availabity of Diesel if Red is lost......I have seen issues with LPG and Petrol so it does worry me slightly...

Re: Heating oil.

I believe you could still officially use red diesel for your generator, heating and cooking - but you'd need to get a separate tank fitted...

It's already become much harder to get fuel in North Wales. It isn't economic for some of the yards to sell it owing to the extra bureaucracy now in operation plus restrictions on selling in cans.

Re: Heating oil.

and can I get a sneaky valve to transfer fuel between tanks.....as I am sure many others will! Anyway there are a lot of diesel boats in the uk (50,000 ish I think I read) so who is going to check them all?

Re: Heating oil.

Indeed, especially as you'll have dye in the tanks for years to come. Of course, it may be a bit of a clue if you're taking hundres of litres of "heating oil" and a few of white...

Its not yet come to pass yet though....

Re: Red Diesel - \'TWILL HURT ME!

Cars use Diesel Engine Road Vehicle fuel or DERV which can be seen displayed on some pumps. Boats and many other modes of transport use diesel and do not use roads. Tractors and site vehicles for instance. Even private vehicles that do not use roads. Hence they do not pay road tax

Re: Heating oil.

That would give it away....except if you said that you had already filled up with DERV downstream but they did not have Red /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The plans are already formulating.....

So chemically speaking heating oil and motor diesel are the same thing?

Getting more creative for a moment, if a boat had a single tank to fuel a generator that either topped up batteries or propelled a boat via an electric motor how would the authorities determine the % of duty owing?

I never thought speculation about tax avoidance could be so much fun.

Re: diesel-electric

I think, you are actually speculating about tax evasion...possibly much more fun so long as you don't get caught.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Red Diesel - \'TWILL HURT ME!

In response to ChugginAround's post - I agree completely! It's horses for courses. People go boating for all sorts of reasons. These laudable people who go sailng around saying they use no fuel (ha!) and don't care about rising fuel costs, for whatever reason; all very well! But they may never know what's round the corner. They may be disabled tomorrow and can only sail about in a motor boat, they may want a tow from a motorboat tomorrow, not all motor boats use tons and tons of fuel, etc, etc. Keep an open mind! I love any boat!

...ducks quickly down below the parapet again...

Re: Red Diesel - \'TWILL HURT ME!

unfortunatly the removal of tax free deisel wont reduce the use of MOBOs nor limit the use of todays large "Baveria" type modern inboard, just as huge petrol price increaces havent reduced the number of huge 4x4s on the road.

The increases will be added to company expence tax deductions, for entertaining?just as the 4x4 are company cars or expence deductable.

One post said unemplyment benifit should be reduced as well!!! I hope not or the thousands of refugees arriveing in Spain daily might then stay in France instead!!!
The EEC said last week that the refugees arriveing should not be hurt by their efforts to get to the UK,haveing built a a good road from Nigeria to Morroco they now want to lay on a luxuary cruise ship to bring them hurt free to the UK!! The govt will need all the taxes it can get!!
