My friend wants to buy a motor sailer.
Length 30-35ft
Cruising area SW Ireland
Budget £50K
He's ex motor boater (Doral/Maxum) and now wants to do a bit of sailing and motoring

He mainly will only stay over for a couple of days at a time- so, no need for extensive accomodation

Suggestions for make and model appreciated

Regards

David C

If extensive accomodation is not required, he could get a good sailing boat for £50K which happens to have a good big engine, and have a more rewarding boat which will encourage learning the sailing side; the list of suitable boats is too long for here but it will be fun looking.

try emailing Caer Urfa of this parish. He knows everything about Colvics Watsons, and where there are some good examples. £50k will get you a really good one.

Excellent decision to go for a motor sailer.

Is the OP's friend certain about what qualities he requires?

Asking for motorsailor recommendations is a bit like asking for suggestions for a 35' motor boat - they could vary from a large RIB to a displacement cruiser.

To me a motorsailor is a boat that can make good progress in adverse weather conditions under either sail or motor. It doesn't require heavy displacement or an enclosed helm, although the latter would need sufficient shelter.

This is our 34' motorsailor:

Depends if he'll be single handed - or if he has a wife who, being used toa mobo, might not like sailing at 45º in which case a catamaran might suit.

There is a Colvic Watson in Beautiful condition moored near me in Gosport that has just been put up for sale. PM me for further details if interested.

Beneteau did a motor sailor 50/50 as they call it in France around that size. Sailed better than many motor sailors.

I met a couple who circumnavigated on theirs.

Think it is called an Eclipse but not sure.

I think the Beneteau was called the Evasion.
Jeanneau did one called the Espace, one for sale in Clyde Marina asking £43k

I'm biased but the larger two Colvic Watson's would offer him what he wants - good sailing but not close winded, strong motor for when you need it - you sacrifice a cockpit to get an aft cabin but we have more space than we know what to do with :)

There's a nice Nauticat 35 for sale on Apollo Duck - lying in Dublin. It has a higher asking price than your budget, but these days I guess that's negotiable.
Trident Voyager 35 same hull as the Warrior / Challenger. aft open cockpit and inside steering as well. Roomy with loads of storage space. Sails pretty well too! Several have circumnavigated.

Hi David

There are motor sailers and motor sailers and there are toys!
But none will match the Colvic Watson which has a pedigree second to none.

At that budget you can get a very nice Colvic Watson, BUT, your friend first needs to think carefully about crew, will he want to sail it mainly single handed or always with available crew as sailing single handed a large Colvic Watsons can be a handfull under full sail.

If he has crew and wants to sail in any weather I suggest he looks at a CW 31'-6", I also help in my Pre Buying Inspection Visits for new buyers of CW 's or if I can help on line just drop me a line as finding a CW for sale is no problem, finding a good one is a big problem, so make sure he does his homework first!.

westerly riviera. Moody Eclipse, Hunter Horizon 32, Westerly Konsort duo (slightly smaller) Southerly.....list goes on.....a bit.

Jeanneau Espace
LM Vitesse 33
Southerly 105/115
Westerly Riviera

Some choices already mentioned that all sail fairly well too - if wish to go for a traditional one:

Fisher 34

I think these are good suggestions, a sailing yacht with a sheltered steering position and ample engine power might be a better long-term bet than a traditional motor-sailer - which may not be very rewarding to sail.

Couldn't agree more; a boat which handles like a pudding under both power and sail is not going to make the suggested owners' heart leap or encourage him to learn sailing.

Don't agree with that bit. We trash other yachts when its f6 plus.
